Secrets of Skinny Cooking by Victoria Dwek & Shani Taub Review + Giveaway! (Closed)

In the face of the terrible tragedy that occurred last week, I won't be posting as regularly as I used to until I feel I can. This blog was prepared to go up last Thursday but as I was sitting Shiva at the time for my dear brother Meyer Nechemya, I rescheduled it.

Ironically, I started a health program today and have plans to not only transform my body but my life as well. I have always been able to eat healthy and exercise to get back to my ideal weight but I've never been able to keep those last stubborn 15-20 lbs. off being the foodie I am and all. I can't wait to share more about this program once I see what kind of results I get. My main goal is to have more energy, sleep better and get more done each day.

I think the eating side of this program will actually be fairly simple for me because I've already been reducing my calories and eating slightly healthier for the past 6 months or so. This Secrets of Skinny Cookbook as actually been a huge part in that because I can always use some healthy foods and recipe ideas. I plan to use some of these recipes as a base for some meals while on program by committing and adding what's necessary, so it'll be a great guide and inspiration.

Here's my thoughts on the book overall: Victoria Dwek does it again! I love her foldout recipes included in my breadberry grocery order box every week and I've mentioned her other cookbooks fondly in the past. She's just a food genius. I like the cover page but it's pretty typical of what is already out there. There's nice pictures along with every recipe, and you know how visual I am so that's fantastic. My favorite recipe in the book is the one for the falafels, everyone in the family absolutely loved them! I still have many to try but every one I have has been a great success. There's a variety of different dishes and ingredients, so there's really something there for everyone I think. The instructions are basic and clear too and I love the little side notes added to answer any questions you may have and offer variation ideas to change things up to your taste. There is one little tiny detail I'm not overly fond of and that is the use of Splenda in so many recipes. First, I think the omition of sweeteners altogether is a far better attitude when it comes to getting your health on track. Second, it's common knowledge that Splenda is full of harmful chemicals. I always substitute for either agave or stevia which are far cleaner, better options in my opinion. Overall, I think it's a well written book and the recipes are really interesting too. If your looking to get healthy, this will probably be a good start.
