The Canteen, Kosher Brooklyn Restaurant

We visited The Canteen with the family one Sunday night when the summer first began. I immediately fell in love with the eclectic vibe of the place. I wondered why I had not been there sooner, I had never heard of them and came across the restaurant by chance one day enroute to a nearby Target. They are easy to spot with their large attractive overhead sign and graffite accent wall.

When we arrived at dinner time, the place was actually packed. It cleared out very soon after as people were already finishing up and we got a table easily. They are a counter service style and you can find paper menus at the front register where you also place your order. I did think the food was a bit pricey for the portion size but we didn't leave hungry either.

A nice addition are the fountain soda machines on one wall where you can fill up drinks on your own- a nice and simple way of serving them but it went well with their whole esthetic as well. We were happy to find many options to suit our picky 5 year old who prefers very plain foods. The dishes were also served very fast which pleased out grumbling bellies at dinner time.

We ordered the nachos which comes with guacamole, salsa, chips, ground beef and non dairy cheese sauce over it all. It was incredibly good and unique for a kosher place! The brisket sandwich left a little to be desired in my opinion with not enough sauce or toppings. To me it was simply a large toasted hero bun with loads of shredded pulled beef piled inside. I think a great sauce and some unique toppings would turn it around, otherwise it is something I can easily prepare at home.

The battered onion rings were really nice and crispy and actually unique to others like it we've ordered elsewhere in the past. Our five year old seemed very satisfied with his hot dog and fries which he kindly shared with his little brother.

Have you been to eat at The Canteen? What did you think?

The Canteen is located at 2436 Nostrand Avenue. Phone number- (347) 702-8988

I've yet to eat at Wolf & Lamb steakhouse. I think it may be a good choice for my husbands birthday in September. Will that be next?

Have a kosher restaurant you love or are curious about? Let me know which it is in the comments form below as I always enjoy eating in new places!

Rimmel London Lasting Finish Foundation

My section for foundations in the makeup drawer is getting a bit ridiculous. It's that time again when I resolve to do a clean out and keep only the ones I really like and use often. This Rimmel one has been on my undecided list for a long time now with several pros and cons I've found along the way.

Let's start with the consistency. This foundation is an overly thick liquid foundation and therefore tough to blend out. In the images you can see where it kind of left a line at my hairline where I must not have blended over hard enough. Because it is so thick it gets overly caked up in my brushes on one use, yuck! The good side to it being this consistency is how full coverage it is, it also lasts on my skin very well. I've gotten an easy 12 hours out of it. I've yet to try it for 25 hours to test that over extravagant claim, it does begin to break up around my problem areas at that 12 hour mark though.  A nice detail is that It's easy to remove at the end of the night, a basic cleanser does the trick.

I chose this specific shade: 203 Beige when I was very self tanned. On a normal day, it would not match my neck at all.
The glass bottle is nice with it's red lid but no pump is included so you end up with far too much product being poured out at a time.

It is matte in finish so it suits me well in the summer time when my t-zone is oily. If you have overly dry skin I would definitely skip this one for that exact reason. Scents normally never bother me but this one is highly perfumed, not chemical like, but just a bit too much when I'm applying it. It comes with the typical 1 oz. of product and at somewhere around $6.99 it's very decent for a drugstore product.

I'm not quite ready to chuck this product in the bin but it's certainly not one of my most used or most beloved foundations. I'm close to finishing it off  now, probably since so much product is wasted with each use. I obviously don't see myself repurchasing it in the future. If you are looking for a really full coverage foundation with long lasting abilities, you may find you love this one. If you cannot tolerate heavily perfumed makeup or have super dry skin, you may want to avoid it.

Have you given this foundation a try? If you have, what did you think of it? If you haven't do you want to? Are there any foundations you'd like to recommend to me?

Let me know in the comments form, along with any other opinions you may have, I love hearing from readers!

3 "Famous" Gigi's Kitchen Dips Revisited- Jalapeño, Scallion & Roasted Eggplant (VIDEO)

It's not often I prepare my own dips. There are so many already prepared options to pick up at the groceries these days that it sometimes feels unnecessary. Every time I do whip some up, I realize that there is nothing like a homemade dip straight from the household food processor. I get so many compliments on them from friends and family alike and honestly there is just nothing better to dip a thick slice of challah into on Shabbos. These 3 specific dips have been with me for a while, I'm pretty sure since my first year of marriage even. This weeks youtube video shows exactly how I get each one from start to finish so watch it here if you'd like, or read until the end of the post where it will be inserted as always.

And now for the exact recipes:

Jalapeno Dip:

Ingredients:

2 Jalapeno Peppers, seeds removed
2 Tablespoons Mayonaise
1 Tablespoon Sugar
Pinch of Salt
1 Tsp Lemon Juice

Method:

1. Chop off ends of jalapeno peppers and remove seeds and veins. Slice them up
2. Toss jalapeno peppers into a food processor fitted with a blade attachment.
3. Add mayonnaise, lemon juice, sugar, salt and lemon juice.
4. Process until smooth and then pour into a sealable container and refrigerate until serving time.

Scallion Dip:

Ingredients:

1 Large Bunch of Scallions, mostly green and pale green parts
2 Tablespoons Mayonaise
1 Tablespoon Dijon Mustard
2 Tablespoons Sugar
1/2 Teaspoon Olive Oil
1 Teaspoon Vinegar

Method:

1. Chop ends off scallions and rinse very thoroughly.
2. Add them to food processor after putting blade attachment in place.
3. Add in the mayonnaise, dijon mustard, sugar, olive oil and vinegar.
4. Process until smooth and then pour into a sealable container and refrigerate until serving time.

Roasted Eggplant Dip:

 Ingredients:

1 Large Eggplant
Salt and Pepper to taste
1 Teaspoon Olive Oil
1 Teaspoon Fresh Chopped Garlic (colander jarred)
2 Tablespoons Mayonaise
1 Teaspoon Lemon Juice
2 Teaspoons Sugar
1 Teaspoon Cumin

Method:

1. Cut the peel off of the eggplant.
2. Preheat oven to 450
3. Cut eggplant into medium sized cubes. Lay the pieces out in a single layer on a non stick baking sheet and sprinkle evenly with olive oil, salt and pepper.
4. Roast for 20 minutes or until eggplant is cooked through and slightly softer.
5. Allow the pieces to cool for some time before adding them to the food processor already fitted with the blade attachment.
6. Add chopped garlic, mayonaise, lemon juice, sugar and cumin and then process until smooth.
7. Then pour into a sealable container and refrigerate until serving time.

That Light Weight Pink Cropped Jacket, Outfit of The Day

It has been a MINUTE since I shared a Friday Fashion post. Or an outfit post for that matter! In this weeks video I talked about several of the pieces worn here and actually described this ensemble and how much I was loving it for a casual summer day. This Agaci pink cropped jacket suits my shape so well and I've found so many great uses for it. This is just one way I like to style it.

This is my typical casual every day look but I could easily throw on a pair of heels with it for a dinner date or work meeting. It's the small details that bring it all together. The green skirt was an absolute find at Forever 21, the ribbed detail is something I'm drawn to a lot lately but that forest green shade is what I love most. I added a black string necklace with gold tubed layers to take it up a notch. The sunglasses are my new pair from Aldo in the style "Hidia" and I thought they worked really well with the rest of the black and gold I incorporated with my bag- also Aldo, and the rose gold beaded open toe shoes from Target. Oh and the white top underneath is just my typical Kiki Riki 3/4 sleeved shell.

My nail polish is from the new Essie collection but I plan to do a full nails of the day post in the near future as it is the perfect purple with blue tones. My wig is Irene and as I often do, I pulled the fronts back into a high messy half bun. I was thinking of possibly filming a hair tutorial for it, it's truly so simple and requires no heat.

This look can be carried right into fall too. But lets not think about that until it's time. The summer is my time of year. Being stuffed under a coat doesn't really allow me to play with fashion much so this is definitely where it's at for me.

I truly love how this look came together and I hope to share more of my style in the coming months. Do you have any pieces in you closet this season that you find yourself wearing over and over again in all kinds of ways? Those are the kind I like to invest in because I know how much I'll be enjoying them.

Let me know what you think of this look! I love hearing your opinions on style and everything else!

Have a great weekend!

Thanks so much for stopping in!

Halftime Grill Kosher Sportsbar

I don't drink alcohol much. I simply don't have the tolerance for it. One cup of 5% sweet and fruity Bartenura wine on a Friday night  occasionally and my limbs feel like jello. Suddenly everything around me is hilarious and shortly after I'm in bed for the night. The following morning always brings the worlds worst headache. So drinking isn't on the top of my list of fun things to do. Visiting every new Kosher restaurant I possibly can on the other hand is always on top of my to do list.

Last months date night was dinner and a movie. Well the opposite way around. We saw the Jungle Book which was super cute- the graphics were incredibly well done. We then headed to Halftime Grill, the new Kosher sports bar, brand new to Flatbush in Brooklyn.

My husband was really excited about it's opening, has already been back for a second visit with friends and really enjoyed everything about the place each time.

The food was just decent in my opinion although my husband said they did a great job on his burger. I guess a grilled chicken salad is hard to impress with though. The prices were very decent and I think this is a great spot for the guys to come hang around, grab a nosh and watch their favorite sports on the big screens around the room. As a women, I want to add I was not uncomfortable at all as there were other couples and women there. My husband and I aren't super into sports is all.

All in all, I think this brings something great and new to the kosher food horizon and since have heard about the opening of a similar style place in Monsey.

Have you been to visit Brooklyn's new Sportsbar? What did you think of it if you have? What was your favorite dish?

If you have not been? Do you want to?

Halftime Grill Kosher Sportsbar is located at 2112 Flatbush Avenue, phone number: 718-759-6688.

Next stop for us will most likely be Bison and Bourbon.

Anastasia Bevely Hills Dip Brow Pomade in Medium Brown

I spilled the beans on everything brows back in February when I reviewed another of Anastasia's brow products everyone seems to love- the Brow Wiz as well as a brow gel I often use- the Benefit Gimme Brow. For the first time in my life, I finally like what I see in the mirror when I complete my brow routine. Not to sound dramatic or anything, but for all I've been through with these brows of mine, this is big!

Just when I thought nothing could top the brow wiz, I gave the dip brow pomade a try. The #12 brush was recommended in combination on Sephoras website when I bought it and it's a great match with it's precise angle and spooly end.

The thing about my brows is that there is one patch that just refuses to be filled by any product I've used until now because of a scar running through from when I was a kid. The dip brow pomade has been the first and only product to fill it, and make it look like I actually have had hairs growing in that spot all along.

The texture is slightly thick, a bit waxy feeling, but still super smooth. This combination means the bare spots get filled while the product grabs onto the natural hairs, making them appear thicker. The downside with this is that it can be easily overdone. Using a light hand and short strokes does the trick. Also, if you don't go in with a really good makeup remover at the end of the night it'll stay on for days- while this is a pro for this lazy girl, it may not be for someone else.

One of these days, I'll record an in depth brow routine video to showcase exactly how I use this pomade.

Left brow done, right brow undone

The substantial glass jar is filled to the brim with product and if not for it almost completely drying out after about a month, it would last for absolutely ages. I screw the lid tightly shut after each use but I have heard I'm not the only one experiencing this. I will still be hanging onto mine now that it's pretty much done for and dried out because apparently there is a hack of adding eye drops or some product to it and reincarnate it.

As for the color, I couldn't ask for a better match in Medium Brown. This pomade is available in about 12 different shades ranging from light taupe to almost deep black so I think there is probably one to suit everyone too.

I think at $18 this product is worth every penny!  This brand is well known for the brow products for very good reason. A brow brush at the same price on the other hand I'm not certain is a necessity, even though it does perform well.

Have you given this brow pomade a try? If you have, what did you think of it? If you haven't do you want to?

My Orzo Salad Recipe

When I can't think of something to cook, I often go to my archives and find an old favorite to try again. I sometimes end up tweaking my original recipes even further to make them that much better. This orzo salad was one of my first ever recipes to get posted on this blog. It deserves to be revisited, it's the quickest summer salad to throw together.

Orzo Salad

Ingredients:

1 Box of Orzo cooked until al dente'
1/3 Cup Black Olives
Assorted Colored Peppers (Red, Yellow, Orange and Green), chopped small
1/3 Cup Craisins
1/8 Cup Vinegar
1 Tsp. Salt
3 Tablespoons Olive oil
1/2 Tsp. Garlic Powder
1 Tsp. Sugar

Method:

1. Combine cooked orzo once cooled with black olives, chopped peppers and craisins in a large bowl.

2. In a smaller sauce bowl, combine vinegar, olive oil, salt, garlic powder and sugar.

3. Pour the dressing over the orzo and give it a big mix to combine it all. Serve at room temperature or refrigerate in a sealable container for as long as 48 hours.

What is your favorite quick and easy summer salad to throw together when you're in a pinch?

A Summer Fashion Haul 2016 (video)

I've picked up several great summer pieces recently. I've been focused on light t-shirts, sunglasses (because my collection isn't large enough already) and some much needed fitness items. In this weeks video I go into great detail on all of the wonderful items I've most recently purchased, watch it here or read until the end of the post where it will be inserted as always.

My favorite pieces are a new pair of sneakers which are my very first Nike brand pair. Another item that I've been wearing constantly ever since bringing it home is a flamingo pink lightweight cropped jacket from a store called Agaci. It goes with so many looks and I've been wearing it loads.

Another, is a more recent arrival- this white cat eye pair of sunglasses from the Glassesshop.com who were kind enough to mail it to me for review. I was a little worried about purchasing glasses online at first since I have a very hard shape face to fit. When they arrived I was pleased to find them to be quite perfect. I'm due for a new pair of regular glasses and the great thing is they sell both those and prescription sunglasses. I do also have a great coupon for all of my readers it's GSHOT50 and you can use it to get 50% off a pair of glasses or sunglasses.
