Considering how much I've come to adore those Rimmel Scandal Eyes Eyeliners, I thought it wouldn't be a bad idea to give a mascara a go too. I haven't had such great luck with drugstore mascaras in the past, so I was a bit skeptical. My qualifications- volume, length and lasting power. These are the fine details that have me adding a mascara to my every day makeup bag or tossing it in trash. When I saw this on the new item stands at my local CVS, I was very curious and couldn't leave without it.
Here's what Rimmel says about it: "Our first broken heart shaped brush creates a fringe of big, curvy, rockin' lashes. The thin tip grabs hard to reach inner lashes, while the amplified base pulses the lashes with incredible volume and curve."
Here is what I think:
The Brush/Applicator & Packaging: I absolutely love the shape of the wand! It not only combs through my lashes beautifully but is held back a bit therefore keeping away from my skin and just getting into my actual lashes. I love a mascara that keeps the smudges away. As for it's size, I normally prefer a much smaller thinner applicator, but this one doesn't bother me too much after all. If you aren't a fan of large, fat mascara wands, you may not be that into this one. As for the way the packaging looks, some may find it cheesy with the black and red snake print, but I think it's super cool with a great rocker vibe. This definitely makes it easy to find in my collection and has it standing out on the shelves at the stores.
Color Payoff & Lasting Power: The color on this is true to name and is extremely black with the first stroke. It does last a good 6 hours without smudging or flaking at all but it isn't waterproof.
The Price: As with most of Rimmel's products, this one will not break the bank. I managed to snag this in a two pack for somewhere around $7 at CVS too which made it even more worth it. I gave the second one to my younger sister, but I like this enough that having two wouldn't have been a bad thing either.
Formulation: It isn't marketed to be waterproof and that is the one great downside with it for me. I can often get away with wearing non waterproof formulas and still have them hold up nicely throughout the day. This one lasts through the day but with a bit of water, it breaks down and runs everywhere. I know this because I wore it all through the last weeks of my pregnancy and while in labor and I'm not going to lie there was some sweat and tears involved ;) Also, the actual product is a very wet formulation so it needs to be wiped off on the sides before being applied or it can go clumpy. Dry mascaras irritate my eyes, flake and don't apply very well so I'm very into the slick feel this one has.
What it does for my lashes: It adds a whole lot length wise but doesn't give too much in the way of volume with just one coat. For that reason, I like this for an every day natural look but would not choose it if I want really pumped up big lashes for a night out. At the same time, it does curl the lashes and holds that curl well for hours. I really like how it looks on my lower lashes as it adds nice length and brushes through them to separate as well.
Overall: The brush is most likely my favorite detail, I like the way it's shaped because it keeps the mascara from smudging and really does a great job of separating my lashes. The way it wears throughout the day is great but I will try to find it in a waterproof version next time since it doesn't hold up that great through tears and sweat. The price is unbeatable of course.I appreciate the amount of length my lashes get when I'm wearing it, but in regards to volume it does lack some. A detail I find very useful is how great it is at holding a curl, for those that have straight lashes like I do, this is essential! All in all, this is an excellent mascara for every day use. I often top it with a waterproof voluminous mascara for evenings out when a little extra glam is necessary. Is it the best mascara at the drugstore? Probably not. But it's one of the better ones available there in my opinion.
Have you given any of this mascara a try? If you have, what did you think of it? If you haven't do you want to?
