Autumn & Winter 2013 Makeup Trends Focus

Autumn is officially here according to the calendar. The weather here has been a bit bi-polar and undecided, giving us some crisp Fall weather one day and Summer humidity the next. Nonetheless, I've been excitedly building up my wardrobe and makeup collection in anticipation of the months ahead.

Seasonally, I like to share my pick of the trends and how to best wear them. This inspires me to try new things and change it up a little bit and I hope you will join the fun and do the same. Here is the latest chapter with my list of the popular trends that are certain to influence my makeup decisions for the colder months:

1) Matte Skin -This look is clean and flawless and although it seems as though it would just need some powder and large fluffy brush, it's going to be a little more intricate then that. The no makeup makeup look was one of my favorite trends to wear this past summer and this just takes that one step further. Begin by using a liquid foundation with a matte finish and medium to full coverage. Revlon Colorstay Foundation is one of the best inexpensive options available at the drugstore in my opinion! The great thing is that there are different versions to choose from for each of the different skin types. So, not to worry if you are dry in the winter like I am. Applying it with a damp beauty blender or sponge will help it blend into the skin flawlessly and highlighting your cheekbones with a glowing powder will give this look dimension and keep it from looking dull.

2) Winged Eye Liner- The cat flick is back! So get ready to practice your winged eyeliner techniques. Don't be afraid to add in some color as well. Emerald greens, plums and cobalt blues are what I'm thinking. To achieve this look you will want to use a precise liquid eyeliner. The pen forms like Lorac Front of The Line Pro Liquid Eyeliner are easiest to control. But if you are already an expert, a gel eyeliner and angled eyeliner brush will be your best choice. Mac Blacktrack Fluidline is my absolute favorite for that. A piece of tape angled upward from the outer corner of your eye can act as a great guideline as to where you'll want to make your flick. All you need to do next is just bring the line inward, filling it in and bringing it all along the upper lash line in a thinner line as it reaches the inner corner of the eye. I will try to do a tutorial on my YouTube channel or here on the blog when I get a chance, so look out for that if you are interested.

3) Smokey eyes- Lets be honest, smokey eyes will never really go out of style. This time, instead of the classic black look, the greys and neutral smokey eyes are ranking supreme. For an easy smokey eye, use any grey or neutral shade you have in your eye shadow collection and apply it to your eyelids, reaching up into the crease as well with a blending brush. This way you can pack the color on and smooth it out at the same time. Then, smudge some kohl eyeliner pencil into your upper and lower lash lines. You can also smudge some of that same grey lid color under the lower lash line if you'd like. Then apply a light highlight shade to the brow bone and inner corner of the eye and finish off with a few coats of volumizing black mascara and a pair of false lashes if you want to go all out.

4) Wine Colored Lips with a Matte Finish- Ever since I broke out the berry lips around this time last year, I cannot imagine a fall and winter without them. It is the easiest way to glam up any simple day to day look. Smashbox Be Legendary Lipstick in Fig is the one I'll be wearing most, but Mac's Rebel Lipstick  is on my shopping list too. To get this look, you'll want to use a lip brush which will help you apply it precisely and also create a stain of sorts. Start by outlining the lips with the color and then fill it in from the center of the lips feathering outwards. Always blot, since that will press the color into the lips even more and help it stay put.

Those are the makeup trends I am most excited for this season, which ones are you planning on incorporating during the colder months? Let me know in the comments form below, I would love to hear from you!
