The Balm Mary-Lou Manizer Highlighter Review



Before I attended makeup school over 2 years ago, highlighting products seemed like an unnecessary step in my makeup routine. I learnt pretty quickly how useful they can be in bringing forward certain details in the face and how when used right they can create the most gorgeous dewy glowing look! For a while I stuck to using some of my basic champagne eye shadows like Urban Decays "Virgin" from the original Naked Palette  I have since tried liquids and creams but I've come to the conclusion that champagne powder highlighters are the ones I favor most. I've read some amazing reviews and heard the praises being sung about The Balm Cosmetics. So, while perusing Beauty.com, two of their products quickly made it to my cart one being this Mary-Lou Manizer highlighting product as well as the Bahama Mama Bronzer which will be reviewed shortly. Still I had my doubts about them, considering that I don't really go for that cartooney kind of packaging. Overly cutesy packaging aside, the actual product is really quite beautiful.

What the Balm has to say about their highlighter: "Meat Mary-Lou Manizer, a seemingly innocent honey hued luminizer that catchers everybody's eye. This highlighter, shadow and shimmer diffuses light so your skin looks softer and younger while adding a subtle glow"

Color: The color is just perfect for my pale skin tone, it's a bit on the yellow side but I'd still classify it with those champagne colored highlighters. I like that it gives my face that lit from within kind of glow and it is ultra pigmented so with just one swipe you've got the right amount for every area needed. It definitely doesn't have a matte finish but there's no problem with annoying shimmer all over the face after it's applied and when blended well it looks beautiful and not overly shimmery.

Texture: This powder has an incredibly soft feeling to it and is so smooth as it's applied with no annoying chunks of glitter. It's so soft that unfortunately it's already crumbled completely and I am left with millions of pieces of the product to deal with just a few weeks later even with taking special care to keep it safe. I don't know if I am the only one this has happened to but it was very disappointing to say the least.

Packaging: I was a bit turned off by that cheesy cutesy looking packaging but I know there are plenty of people who love that kind of thing. At the same time it seems plasticky but sturdy and I really like that it comes with a large mirror inside for on the go applications.


Price: $24.00 is not terrible for 8.5 grams of product especially as I haven't found anything that rivals it at the drugstore yet.

Photo Friendly? Yes I would have to say this looks absolutely gorgeous in photos and it doesn't look overly sparkly or shimmery either. It looks just as it does in person- glowy.

Recommended Skin Types: I think this will work well for every skin type since it hasn't caused any dryness or excessive oil production for me. I do think oily skinned people will have to be a bit more careful when applying it since as with any other highlighting product you can end up accentuating the oily look even more.

Scent: There isn't one that I have noticed.

Lasting Power: I apply it in the morning and it lasts throughout the day till late evening without fading at all. 


Application Tips: I like to use a small fan brush to apply this as it looks a lot better when it's focused on specific areas instead of being dusted everywhere. I like to start with just a bit on the brush and build it up as I go since it can be overdone pretty quickly otherwise. It can be used like it would be typically, over the bridge of the nose, in the center of the forehead and chin and over the high points of the cheek bones and cupids bow. I have used it on many occasions as an eye shadow all over the lid and on others as an inner corner of the eye and brow bone highlight too so it truly is a multi purpose product.  

Overall: 

I was very disappointed that this product fell apart shortly after I purchased it but I will still use it until I can get a new one since it is absolutely gorgeous! I love that it lasts all day without fading and that it doesn't look overly shimmery too. Although the packaging isn't my favorite I can look past it since the product itself is so beautiful.

Goat Cheese Apple Tartlets Recipe


I've only been apple picking once when I was 12 if I'm not mistaken. The experience of actually picking them off of the tree branches was really fun and made me appreciate the fruit alot more then when just pulling them out of the bins at the grocery. Visiting an apple orchard to do some picking is definitely on my list of things to do this fall and I think my son would love joining in. 

The Rosh Hashana holiday is just a few days away and the main food attractions at the meal are apples and honey which symbolize having a sweet new year. This can be achieved by simply slicing up some apple wedges and passing them around with a dish of honey to dip in but there are lots of more creative ideas for incorporating these two into one beautiful dish. 


The first thing that comes to mind when I think of cooking apples is apple pie which just so happens to be a real family favorite, I can't really remember a birthday where my father didn't celebrate with some good American apple pie. With this dish, I decided to take apple pie to another level with some goat cheese, lemon juice, mini pie shells, sweet honey butter and a sprinkle of cinnamon.  

If you want to make this dish non dairy then just skip the goat cheese and use another fruit as a base. And if goat cheese doesn't sound appealing to you there are so many other spreadable cheeses to choose from. Also, these can be made into one large apple pie if you would like, just use a large pie shell instead of the mini ones shown here. 



Goat Cheese Apple Tartlets


Ingredients:

16 Mini Pie Shells
6 Ounces Fresh Plain Goat Cheese
1 Tablespoon Lemon Juice
3 Medium Red Apples
3 Tablespoons Butter
1/3 Cup Honey
1 Teaspoon Cinnamon

Method:

1. Take the goat cheese out of the refrigerator to let it warm to room temperature and soften a bit.

2. Peel your apples and slice them from the core. Then slice them up into 1/8 inch thick slices. 

3. Once the goat cheese has warmed to room temperature and seems a bit softer place it in a small bowl and add the lemon juice. Mix them up together with your clean hands or with a mixer until it is smooth and almost buttery like in consistency. 

4. Spoon 2 Tablespoons of the goat cheese into each of the mini pie shells. 

5. Top the goat cheese with the apple slices. Overlap each one in a line across the pie shell. 

6. Heat 3 Tablespoons of butter in a medium saucepan and add the honey once it is almost completely melted. Stir the two together for 2-3 minutes until they have come together.

7. Use a pastry brush to coat the top of the apples and rim of the pie shell with the honey-butter. Be generous with it. 

8. Put each of the assembled tartlets onto a baking sheet and preheat the oven to 350. Then put the baking sheet in the oven and allow them to bake for about 25-30 minutes or until the apples are softer and the pie shells golden. 

9. Sprinkle a little cinnamon over each tartlet. Drizzle a plate with some honey remove the tartlet from it's silver foil tin wrapper. Then place the apple tartlet at the center of the plate and serve.

Augusts Kitchen of the Month


I have some great news to share with you today! My husband and I have been fortunate enough to have found a house after the year long search and we actually closed on it yesterday! Our plan is to move in around October time once we have done some minor adjustments and painting etc. Although I am preparing to do alot of designing and decorating it's going to get done slowly overtime which means I can take my time to think it out and get each detail just right. I may just do a decorating series with progress pictures and inspiration but we will have to see. We are obviously very excited and I will definitely share more details about it very soon. The most exhilarating part for me is definitely having a kitchen of my own. I always remind myself that had I not been in my tiny apartment with it's small kitchen for 5 long years this blog may never have existed. It's where everything happens being that it's the center of the place and the one room with great natural light. From makeup work to blogging, cooking of course, photography, youtube videos and more.  I am sad to say goodbye in some ways but I do look forward to the actual move and the changes it will bring in every way possible. I have been packing boxes slowly over the past few weeks as we waited to hear about the mortgage and I am elated that I can now talk about it! If you have been following me on pinterest you may have been a little overwhelmed with the amount of house design photos I have been pinning, but now you know why. If you have any tips at all in regards to decorating and design, please do share them with me as I can use them all right now!

As I've been on the lookout for some kitchen inspiration I actually came across this one and don't you agree that it's quite striking?! Black is surely not a color I've ever considered for a kitchen but it really suits this one well!

Some of the details I like are: 

1) The almost see through cabinet doors above the stove. It gives nice contrast against that dark color with those white dishes peeking out a bit. 

2) The pink details- the flowers in that vase on the counter and the candles down the center of the table. A pop of bright color is just what this kitchen needs. 

3) The diamond accented back splash with it's light grey tones. 

What I don't like as much:

The only thing I don't quite love is the flooring. I would have gone for less of that navy blue color and perhaps some grey, black or just plain white instead.

Autumn Hair Trend Spotlight: Braids


I'm embracing the last weeks of my favorite season with all I've got but Autumn will soon be upon us & the arrival of brisker weather and golden leaves on the ground will insist I investigate some of the exciting new beauty trends. 

One of my favorite details in taking part in the wedding beautification process this summer has been seeing all of the different ways braids were incorporated into glamorous hair styles. I have been a fan of braids ever since wearing them as a kid in pigtails with bobbles at the end! So you can imagine my excitement on seeing all of the various new fall hair trends several of which included beautiful braids!

It's surprisingly easy to master braids and a well executed one can really take an outfit to the next level, it's the perfect accessory and it sure costs a lot less then a designer hand bag.

Tip: Like up dos, they work best on day old hair since the grittier textures make the hair more workable.

Today I want to focus on 3 of my personal favorite braids and give you some easy steps to achieving them:


The Fishtail:

Step 1: Spritz your hair with a texturizing spray or dry shampoo to give it some volume to work with.

Step 2: Gather it into a low pony wherever you want it- at the back of the head, at the side of the head or even as part of a half up hairstyle. Secure the hair at the top with a clear elastic. 

Step 3: Divide the ponytail into 3 sections and begin by taking a thin portion from the outside of the right section and crossing it over all the way to the left side. Then repeat that step on the left side taking a piece from the inside of that piece and pulling it over to the right side. Continue doing this and tighten the braid by pulling the pieces tight as you go especially towards the end of the braid. When you are reaching the tip leave a bit of hair at the end and finish it with a clear elastic. 

Step 4: (Optional) Mess it up a bit with your fingers if you'd like to get a carefree look. If the hair begins to come out of the sides a bit too much you can fasten it with bobby pins. 


The French Braid:

Step 1: Begin by taking a section from the top of the head. Separate it into 3 sections and then cross the left one over the middle and then the right one over the middle like you would do for your basic braid. 

Step 2: Keeping the three strands separated, switch the bunch to your left hand and gathering a small even section from the right side of your head add it to that right strand in your left hand.
Now bring that right strand over to the middle and bring the middle strand over to the right.

Step 3:  Switching hands you now have a free left hand gather a section from the left side and add it to the left strand. Now bring the left strand to the middle and the middle section to the left. And as you do this keep your hands close to your head so that you will get a super tight braid. 

Step 4: Keep repeating steps 2,3 until you finish off the hair and then close it with a clear elastic. 


The Crown:

Step 1: Start by creating an extreme side part in your hair. Mess it up a little with your fingers to create a casual look instead of a very severe line. 

Step 2: Now french braid your hair keeping the braid as close to the part as possible. 

Step 3: Bring the section you are working with around the side of your head to the back and when you reach the end of the braid, secure it with a clear elastic. 

Step 4: Twist some hair from the other side of the part and bring it to the back of your head securing it with some bobby pins.

Step 5: Put together a loose chignon by twisting all of your hair at the back three to four times. Then tuck in the ends and pin them with some "U" shaped bobby pins. 

Step 6: Lightly tease your hair around the crown of your head and then hide the ends by tucking them into the chignon and spray over your whole head with some hairspray. 

Step 7: (Optional) Rub your hands over the braid slightly to have it looks a little less tidy.

Pear & Honey Sorbet with Pomegranate Sauce Recipe



I've been planning on making a sorbet all summer long and for some reason or another it just didn't happen. That is until this idea popped into my head and I immediately set about gathering the ingredients for this Autumn and holiday season appropriate desert. Sorbets are a really nice way to finish off a meal if your looking for something not too heavy and they are almost too easy to make! With a bit of fruit puree and enough syrup to freeze it you have the perfect recipe. I threw in a cookie cutter and some sauce for extra pizazz but an ice cream scoop and a few slices of pear will be good too. This recipe makes enough for about 6 people to have 2 scoops but if you have leftovers it can be kept in the freezer. One detail that I cannot stress enough in regards to this recipe is choosing pears that are perfectly ripe, this will help with the quality and taste of the finished product. My pears were already quite sweet naturally so not too much sugar was needed, keeping it healthier for me. This would also make the ideal Rosh Hashana desert as it can be prepared well in advance.



Pear & Honey Sorbet with Pomegranate Sauce 

Ingredients:

2 pears
1/4 cup water
1/8 cup sugar
1 tsp nutmeg
1/4 cup honey

1 loaf pan
cookie cutter in fun shape

Pomegranate sauce:

1/2 cup pom pomegranate juice
1/8 cup corn syrup
5 tablespoons sugar

Method:

1. Peel the pears and then chop them up.

2. Put the pears, water, sugar, nutmeg and honey into a blender. Blend until it is all smoothed and combined.

3. Freeze the liquids from the blender in a loaf pan placed in the freezer for a few hours-a week.

4. Heat the pomegranate juice, corn syrup and sugar over a low flame in a medium sauce pan until you have a thicker liquid consistency.

5. Put a cookie cutter or ice cream scoop under hot water for two minutes and then cut out shapes or scoop the sorbet out onto plates.

6. Once the syrup has cooled off spoon a bit over each serving of sorbet and serve.

A Week in Review #3

Another week flew right by me. It's that time again where camp has ended and school hasn't started yet which is great for spending time with family! My 14 year old sister has been over to help and it's been so amazing since my son loves her so much! It's not often I get to spend this much time with her and we are truly enjoying every minute before she goes home to start high school and my son is off to nursery-eeek! Here is a little bit of what my week looked like last week:


With Instagram:

I spotted this beautiful butterfly one morning and I had to stop and take a picture of it. Although I am no fan of creepy crawling things I think butterflys are so beautiful.

I found a really nice picture of the bridesmaids makeup I did for a wedding a few weeks ago, loved the navy theme!

We fed the fish in my husbands office and my son was fascinated with the clownfish who looks just like Nemo!

When girls get together things like makeup, nails and hair are sure to happen and we've been doing just that. I even attempted a mermaid/fishtail braid in her hair on Friday!

A coffee cup that looks like a camera lens- I think it is the perfect accessory for any blogger and definitely a must have for me!

I find snapple cap facts so humorous! This random one was actually quite interesting. 

I walked into a store to get a pack of gum and what do I see the sidewalk outside- cages with birds, one was this adorable but very loud parrot!

Last week we ate this kale salad along with one of our dinners.  It was really very simple to put together with the addition of some beets, pomegranate seeds, orange slices and poppyseed dressing.

Friday Fashion: 3 of My Favorite Fashion Bloggers & Recreating Their Fall Outfits/Looks

I think the greatest thing that ever happened in fashion history is fashion blogs. A daily dose of style is every fashionistas dream and with just a few clicks it's ours to enjoy. I myself have a huge fashion blog feed on bloglovin' that I click through very often. There's so much to take in, from outfit inspiration, fall wardrobe ideas and all sorts of fashion advice on the latest trends. There are some specific blogs that I turn to when I'm in a fashion bind- looking for the perfect piece for a special occasion or some trend pointers. These girls have always got my back! Today I am going to share 3 of them along with a fun little recreation of an outfit of theirs that I think would be great for autumn going into winter. Have you begun shopping for your fall wardrobe? I haven't yet but I am definitely eyeing some things from Forever 21, H&M, Target and my latest website find- Ethical Superstore who not only sell fashionable beauties but chocolate and household essentials too!

You'll visit her site and never leave! Her photos are unbelievably gorgeous with backgrounds that look like their from a storybook. She's definitely not afraid to rock the looks that she personally loves and you can tell that she loves mixing in bright colors! 


I think this outfit will be great for those brisker end of autumn days when a heavier jacket is needed. I love the combination of cream, navy and a pop of burnt orange! 



This isn't the first time I'm talking about Anna and it definitely won't be the last! I am in love with her site and her gorgeous style choices. She's not afraid to be bold, mix prints and have a good time with what she wears!


This outfit is one that would work well for the very beginning of fall when it may still be a little warm out. The jean jacket layered over this navy and orange maxi dress will be just the thing!  



You won't find any Lavish LV Bags or Jimmy Choo Stilettos on Kimberlys site but you will find the best budget worthy items from all over the web.  She wears those pieces so well that you wouldn't even know where they are from anyways! 


The darker colors here- burgandy, browns and black come together to form the best Autumn look in my opinion. Light looking but warm enough for those chilly fall days, this outfit is perfection!

Loreal Infallible 24 Hour Eye Shadows Review


Eye shadow is a regular feature in my daily makeup routine. More often then not I choose to make use of my palettes which conveniently have several shades to choose from to create a more intricately detailed look. Quite often there are those days where I am in a hurry to head out the door and that is where these single shadows come into play. They can be swept over the lid briefly for just a touch of color while still looking quite polished. I discovered these a few months back and have had the slightest obsession with them since. I love them so much that I have already done an eye makeup tutorial using each of the ones shown here. With their gorgeous color payoff the possibilities are endless when it comes to applying them. I want the entire collection and I don't think I will last another trip to the drugstore without grabbing some more shades.

888 Iced Latte 

Consistency: I was worried that these would be chunky and glittery but instead they are actually some of the smoothest eye shadows around. As I swipe my finger through one I feel like it is kind of "melting" onto my finger- that is very soft! These kind of remind me of a cream eye shadow in a powder form especially since they don't need any primers applied first to help them stick around. 

Quality & Lasting Power: These shadows are supposed to be water resistant and that they are. Although I wasn't in the pool with them on I have tried to wash swatches off my hand which was impossible without my Sonia Kashuk Eye Makeup Remover. What's even more amazing is that they do indeed last 24 hours. It's rare that an eye shadow actually lives up to those kind of long wearing claims so I was very impressed upon noticing this. 

Price: I found these eye shadows going for $6.97 on Walmart's website and although I purchased mine at Duane Reade that is the best deal I have found so far. I think $7 is a very good price for a single eye shadow of this quality and pigmentation.

335 Endless Sea

Pigmentation & Finish: Most of the shadows in this line are shimmery in finish but not in an annoying kind of way. If you aren't one for shimmer you will definitely not like these though. The color payoff on these is incredible! With just one swipe you've got enough color for an entire lid. 

Scent: No scent that I've noticed. 

Packaging: I think the packaging on these is so unique and definitely not cheap looking at all. The pot it's housed in is square and I like that it's hard plastic instead of glass which is usually heavy and easily breakable. Each one comes with a little insert that keeps the product pressed into place as it's alot like a pressed pigment. I wouldn't recommend tossing that but actually holding onto it as it is an important detail in keeping the eye shadow in one piece.

890 Bronzed Taupe

Color Variety: I am under the impression that there are different shade ranges available for these depending on the different countries. The U.S. collection is where I purchased mine from and there are 18 shades available in total. From neutrals like browns, taupe's and beige's to brights like turquoise, olive and sapphire there is definitely a shade to suit every personality! The bronze one is the first one I purchased and it's definitely my favorite of these shown here.

Amount of Product: There is about 3.5 G of product in these little pots and in comparison with Mac Eye shadows which come in at about 1.5 G for $15.00 this one is worth every penny. 


Application Tips: I like to use a synthetic brush to apply these as it picks up the eye shadows really well and packs them onto the lid nicely too without too much fall down. Ultimately the best way to apply them for the most color payoff is with fingers as you can blend them over the lid without sheering them out. 


Overall: I do not have a bad thing to say about these shadows! They are rich and saturated in color, last longer then any of my other powder shadows and go for a great price for the amount of product available.

Hawaiian Beef Burgers with Homemade Teriyaki Sauce Recipe


Like many American families the summer time is our chance to pull out the grill and cook up all sorts of tasty meals. We tend to do so once a week, usually on Sunday. The best part in my opinion is that I get the night off of making dinner with my husband manning the grill. This way I can focus on other things that need to get done around my house. Although I have never been crazy about eating meat, a juicy burger is one I'll tolerate. A burger can get pretty boring though when served in that same classic way- with tomatos, pickles, ketchup and lettuce etc. If you are looking for a new way to jazz up a plain burger like I was then you are going to love this Hawaiian inspired choice with a slice of pineapple, red cabbage and homemade teriyaki sauce. Considering that Summer is getting closer to it's end and it will soon be time to say goodbye to our outside grill we are trying to squeeze in as many uses as possible. Don't have access to a grill? Don't worry, these can also be cooked up in the broiler under your oven!


Hawaiian Beef Burgers with Homemade Teriyaki Sauce

Yields about 10 Medium Burgers

Ingredients:

Burger Patties:
1/2 lb. Ground Beef
Salt, Pepper & Steak Spice of choice for Seasoning
1 Egg
1/4 Cup Breadcrumbs

Teriyaki Sauce:

1/4 Cup Soy Sauce
1/4 Cup Lemon Juice
1/4 Cup Water
1  Tablespoon Corn Starch
5 Tablespoons Brown Sugar
1 Tsp. of Ginger spice
1 Tsp Fresh Crushed Garlic, Chopped

Pineapple Rings from the Can or Fresh
Red Cabbage, Shredded
Hamburger Buns

Method:

1. Combine the ground beef, spices, egg and breadcrumbs. Form round patties with the mixture and lay them out in a single layer on a parchment paper lined roasting pan.  

2. Prepare the teriyaki sauce by combining all of the ingredients in a medium sauce pan and heating over the fire on the stove top for 3-4 minutes or until it comes to a rolling boil. 

3. Brush the teriyaki sauce onto each beef patty and on the pineapple rings which then all go straight onto the grill to cook for 8-10 minutes on each side (or in the broiler for 5 minutes on each side). 

4. Once the burgers are ready to your liking remove them from the grill. Lay the pattys out on the bottom half of the burger buns. Spoon some of the teriyaki sauce over each patty. Then top them each with a pineapple ring and some red cabbage. Seal it all with the top side of the bun and serve.
