Spiced Home Fried Potatoes

I have so many different favorite foods including mushrooms, avocados and yeah I said it-  Chocolate! (more like a favorite snack anyway)  But my favorite food by far is potatoes- fried, boiled, baked, potato salad, french fries, potato chips...you name it! My favorite potato is Yukon gold which I'm sure you can already tell from my other recipes with potatoes in them. But I like baby red potatoes, russet potatoes etc as well.
So you better believe that I am constantly thinking about potatoes and how to make something new and yummy with them.

So here's one of my newer potato recipes:

-4 Large Yukon Gold Potatoes
-1 Onion Sliced, in desired fashion
-1/4 Cup Oil for Deep Frying
Spices- 1/4 Cup Paprika, 1/4 Cup Chili Powder, 4 Tablespoons Garlic Powder, 4 Tablespoons Onion Powder, 1 Tablespoon Salt, 1 Tsp Pepper, 1 Tablespoon Sugar

Start by bringing a pot of salted water to a boil. Add the potatoes to the pot. Boil for 15 minutes and shut the flame. Do not boil for more then 15 minutes. Take off peel with fingers once the potatoes have cooled. I like to pour in ice cold water to stop the cooking and cool them off so I can peel them right away. But that's just a preference.  Do not dry off the potatoes. Keep them moist so they will be easily rolled in spice mixture. Once peel is removed, chop potatoes into medium sized wedges. Start a non stick frying pan with the oil on a low flame to warm up. Prepare a spice mixture with the paprika, chili powder, garlic powder, onion powder sugar, salt and pepper in a bowl. Roll the potato pieces in the spice mixture till completely covered in it. Put the potatoes in the hot frying pan carefully. Let them fry for about 5 minutes on each side moving them around a little so they do not burn. Once finished they should have a nice crispy outside and a soft mushy inside Yum! Take them from frying pan with a slotted spoon and lay them out on a paper toweled plate or pan to remove excess oil from them.

Trying to keep it a little healthier? Once rolled in spices you can put them in the oven and bake on 400 for 20 minutes or until crisp instead of frying them.

These can be served as a side dish for any meal.

Serving it as a side for a Dairy dish? You can add some Parmesan cheese to the spice mixture. Delish!

   Heart Shaped Potato awwwww

Raspberry Whiskey Bbq Chicken

Ever since I had my gall bladder removed almost 3 years ago, I haven't been much of a chicken or meat eater due to my stomach not processing fatty foods as well. That may be why I am such a dairy lover. But I do make chicken and meat all the time and I just eat whatever sides I make- rice, potatoes, salad etc. Not to say I never eat chicken or meat but I really don't eat it often. I also never really liked it that much for it be such a problem for me. Chicken may seem a little boring as it is often served for dinner. This one was definitely not typical- preparation wise and according to those who ate it it was really delicious! The recipe for the potatoes which were the side dish here should be up in my next blog post so keep an eye out for that!

                                              The Raspberry Whiskey Sauce Simmering

                                                               Spoon Sauce over Chicken

Chicken in Pan After Hour of Being Baked All Ready to Be Served

-3 Chicken Bottom Pcs
-1 Large Vidalia Onion ( Yellow Sweet Onion ) Circle Sliced in Thick Pieces and then Halved
-1 Tsp Fresh Chopped Garlic
-1 Tablespoon Chopped Scallion- Green Parts Only
- 1/4 Cup Veg. Oil
-2 Tablespoons Whiskey
-3 Tablespoons Raspberry Preserves (Jam)
-2 Tablespoons Gefen Onion Garlic BBQ Sauce
-1/2 cup water

Saute' Onion, Garlic and Scallions in about 5 Tablespoons of the oil on a low-medium flame. Let it cook till veggies are all soft. Add the raspberry jam, bbq sauce, whiskey and water. Turn the flame up to bring it to a boil and once it has lower it back to low medium. Stir constantly allowing jam to melt in, alcohol cook out and sauce combine. In the meantime lay the chicken in a separate non stick frying pan with the rest of the oil. Fry on both sides for 5 minutes each or until nicely browned. Remove from frying pan and lay out in a 9x13 pan skin side up. Spoon prepared sauce over Chicken in pan laying the onion and scallion pieces over the chicken. Bake on 400 for 1 hour. When the first half hour has past turn the chickens over skin side down and baste the under side with sauce for 15 minutes. Then turn back over for last 15 minutes of cooking time spooning the onions over the chicken once again and basting with some sauce. Cut into it with a sharp knife to see if it's ready. If it releases red or pinkish juice and it's hard to cut in it should be put back in to bake. If it cuts in easily and is pretty soft and no red or pinkish juices are released then it is ready to be served.

2 New Dips: Hot Pepper Dip and Piemento Dip

Hot Pepper Dip:

1/2 Cup Hot Banana Peppers from the Jar
2 Tablespoons Mayonnaise
1 Tablespoon Sugar
1 Tsp Salt and Pepper

Blend all 4 ingredients in a blender or food processor till smooth.
Not very hard to make. I do not like spicy foods but my husband does and he really liked this with his challah on Shabbos.

Pimento Dip:

1/2 Cup Pimento's ( I take them out of the Jar of the Salad Olives. There's loads of them floating around)
2 Tablespoons Mayo
1 Tsp Garlic Powder and Paprika
3 Tablespoons Sugar
  1/2 Tsp. Black Pepper
2 Tablespoons Green Salad Olives from Jar

Combine all ingredients and blend in blender or food process till smooth.
Drop the olives into the dip and stir in. All ready to serve!
This one was very interesting and different! I like to change it up from time so that it doesn't get boring! Also while we're talking about olives I just want to say that my little boy who is a very pickey eater loves olives! He must be related to me! :)

Saw this pic and just couldn't pass up putting it in this post. This is what gkk is all about cooking, baking and makeup! Thought it was just adorable!

Potato Mushroom Wontons Two Ways

Wontons are a really good appetizer or meal when served with other sides. This ones has a potato mushroom filling but use your imagination to create many other fillings to your desire: spinach, cheese, carrots, cabbage etc.

For this recipe you will need:

6 Large Potatoes
7 Large White Mushrooms, Cleaned, Stems Removed and Chopped
2 Large Shallots, Chopped Small
1 Tsp. Fresh Garlic
2 Tablespoons Olive Oil, for frying vegetables
1Pinch Salt
1Tsp Cayenne Pepper and Paprika
2 Tablespoons Sugar
1 Package Gefen Square Wonton Wrappers

Start by creating the wonton's filling mixture. Boil up the potatoes in a pot of boiling salted water until very soft and mashable. In a small saute pan fry up mushrooms, shallots and garlic. Once they are nicely fried up add the salt, cayenne pepper, paprika and sugar. You can leave out the cayenne pepper if you do not like food very spicy. At this point make sure the wonton wrappers are fully defrosted. Take the peel off the potatoes. Mash them in a bowl. Pour the mushroom mixture in with the potatoes and mix it all together. (Save half of the filling for the other wontons) Now prepare the wontons. Lay out the square wonton wrapper. Take about a teaspoon of the potato mushroom mixture and put it in the center of the wrapper. Wet all the outer edges and close it to make a triangle shape- from the left top corner to the right bottom corner. Then press around the edges with your fingers to be sure they are closed tight. You can make as many as you like. The package of wontons comes with quite a bit of wrappers.

For the first way:

Bring a pot of salted water to a boil. Once boiling lower flame to small- medium. Drop the wontons in about 3-4 at a time and let them cook for 3 minutes at the most before transfering them to a plate. Do not let the wontons cook for more then 3-4 minutes they will become too soft and fall apart and do not cook for less then 3-4 minutes or they will be a little uncooked in spots.

Now for the sauce- You will need:
-1/4 Cup Milk
-3 Tablespoons Parmesan Cheese
-1 Tsp Garlic Powder
-1 Tsp Sugar

Put the sauce ingredients in a sauce pan and bring to a boil. Mix constantly. Once parmesan cheese has melted into sauce shut the flame.

Pour sauce over wontons and serve.

Now for the second way:

Take the same filling and repeat the step of putting it in the center of the wonton wrapper, wetting the outside edges and closing it to form a triangle.

But this time put about 1/4 cup of oil in a frying pan for deep frying.

Heat the oil in a frying pan and once it is hot enough, put the wontons in about 3 at a time and fry for about 3 minutes total so 1.5 minutes on one side and 1.5 minutes on the other side or until golden brown on both sides.

Remove to a plate.

Then make the sauce in a saucepan. heat and mix till smooth and blended together:

1/4 cup soy sauce
1/4 cup honey
2 Tablespoons Sugar

Drizzle sauce over wontons and serve.

Makeup Product Review: Smashbox Blush Rush in: "Flush"

As I try out more of Smashbox products I am realizing what all the hype is about. Their products truly are pretty fabulous! This review is for a blush called Blush Rush: Flush what a cute name!

The shade of the blush below is the color I have: Flush Gingersnap 851- Warm Rosy Bronze.

Blush is an important addition to any makeup routine. It will create that perfect rosy cheek look!
Even if you aren't usually a blush wearer with these blushes you are sure to find a color that suits you.

What is this blush formulated to do? Smashbox says:
Get a gorgeous rush of color with this ultra-luxurious, silky powder blush. In 8 wearable, foolproof shades that wake up any skin tone and packaged in an innovative swivel mirror component for touch ups on-the-go.

There are many amazing blushes on the market. Some of the best are the Nars ones. So what makes these ones really stand out?

1) it has very buildable color which is true to it's shade and can be used to create a more subtle or a little more dramatic look by using a little more or a little less.  Also it gives that perfect dreamy glow with its really great shimmer without leaving large chunks of glitter all over the face which tend to irittate sensitive skin.
2) It has a velvety smooth application which keeps it from getting too cakey and is easy to blend to look natural on skin

3)The little flip out mirror is very handy for on the go.

4)  it provides long lasting, long wearing color.

One downside that I did find is with the packaging. Which can be a little tricky and troublesome to open. Havint to stick your finger into the tiny little notch and pull it open is no fun and can chip a manicure easily.

A swatch of it on my cheek

How to apply: Sweep across cheek bones or under cheek bones with a blush brush for a beautful contoured rosy cheek.

WHERE TO FIND IT: Smashbox.com, Sephora, Sephora inside JCPenny, Ulta, Nordstrom, Beauty.com, and select Macy’s

Makeup Product Review: Smashbox Camera Ready Full Coverage Concealer

Time for a review on some new makeup products that I recently tried out. I have heard lots of great things about Smashbox Cosmetics but never actually tried any of their products. Recently I decided to see what all the excitement was about and try some of their products for myself. I have a few products to talk about so I will be doing a 3-4 part series review. When I get to the last review I will post a very exciting giveaway of some of their products for my subscribers. So check back to see that! Now for the products:

The shade of the conceaeler below is my color- 1-Fair Porcelain.

A good Concealer is a very important makeup product for any women. Wether or not you have dark circles, blemishes, age spots or sun spots you may just want to brighten up the under eye area and look more awake.

What is this concealer formulated to do? Smashbox says:
Dark circles and blotchy skin are now a thing of the past with this vitamin-infused, portable fix-it stick. With this full coverage concealer, you'll be camera ready in no time! It works to make you look your best and more awake so you'll be prepared for any situation or photo opportunity that pops up. The innovative formula contains a soft focus powder to help minimize imperfections and keep your skin looking younger. Provides natural yet buildable coverage on any area of the face. Dark circles and blotchy spots are a thing of the past

There are many concealers on the market right now. So what makes this one stand out?

What I like about this concealer:

1) It's lightweight and small so it's easy to carry around for on the go application and to travel with.

2) It's in stick form and twists up like a lipstick does, so it can be swiped on for easy, quick application.

3) it has a really nice texture- it's not too thick to be cakey and dry but creamy enough that it blends nicely and doesn't settle into lines. The product also lasts longer then other concealers and doesn't slide off easily.

4) It brightens the under eye area to make tired eyes look more awake. I noticed this quality with the very first application. It's a little like a higlighter and concealer in one which is very useful.

How to apply it: I like to apply it straight from the stick and then blend it out with my fingers which works best for this texture since the fingers warm up the product a little. A brush can be used as well. Place it under eyes or on any other blemishes on face. Also a tip: since this product has a formula  which contains a soft focus powder, no powder is actually needed to set it. If you do set it with a powder it may cake and dry out your face.
WHERE TO FIND IT: Smashbox.com, Sephora, Sephora inside JCPenny, Ulta, Nordstrom, Beauty.com, and select Macy’s

Blueberry Apple Kugel

This may be called Blueberry Apple "Kugel" which should then be served as a side dish like any other kugel would. I feel like this is such a sweet and yummy kugel that it can really be served for a desert which is what I do but that is just something of preference. I, like most other women try to watch my weight and eat a little more healthy etc. During the week I am extremely careful with what goes in my mouth, but Shabbos is a true day of rest for me. I don't go crazy and pig out on candy and cake but I do enjoy some food I wouldn't eat during the week. This is one of those snacks/deserts that is just sweet enough to be my extra indulgence but not add too many pounds ;)

3 1/2 Cups Flour
1 Cup Sugar
1 Cup Oil
1 Egg
1 Tsp Baking Powder
4 Green Macintosh Apples
1 Large Can Blueberry Pie Filling
1 tsp Brown Sugar

Prepare crust/crumble topping: Combine flour, sugar, oil, egg and baking powder either in an electric mixer or by hand. Once it is a solid crust take about half the mixture and crumble it into the bottom of a greased pan (round or 9x13 both work) pressing it down all over to create an even layer and pack i. Peel and core apples. cut apples into small pieces. Spread them over crust created in bottom of pan. Sprinkle tops of apples with brown sugar. Then spread spoonfuls of pie filling over apples evenly. Take the rest of the crust mixture and top the rest of the layers already in the pan with it. Spread it out for an even layer of top crust. Bake on 400 for 1 hour or until crust on top has browned.

This can also be done in a pie crust. Just lay out apples and blueberrys in pie crust and top with your own crumble. Also delicious!

Easy and Sweet! Really Yum!

Thanks for stopping in!

             Thanks for stopping in!

Sweet Soy Sauce Salmon

One of my favorite rolls when ordering Sushi is a Sweet Salmon Tempura roll served with sweet soy sauce on the side. I am pretty picky when it comes to fish. The only fish I actually eat is Baby Salmon, I don't like the more typical sweet and sour or teriyaki salmons and I only eat my Salmon warm unlike others who may like to eat fish cold. Because I am so picky with fish it's hard for me to find one that I really like. As I was preparing salmon this week I thought of my favorite sushi roll and that's where the inspiration for this recipe came about.

-2-4 Slices Baby Salmon
-2 Tablespoons Veg Oil
-3 Tablespoons Soy Sauce
-2 Tablespoons Honey
-1 Tablespoon Sugar
1 Tsp Garlic Powder
1 Tsp Lemon Juice
A little Salt, Pepper and Dill Spice.

Whisk together all the ingredients except for the spices. Place them in a container with a cover. Put Salmon into container skin side up so that the actual fish is sitting in the sauce. Marinate for 20-30 minutes in the refrigerator. Place fish in baking pan skin side down. Take sauce from container and spoon it over fish. Then sprinkle spices over top. Bake on 400 for 20 minutes.

Simple to prepare and really yum!

Happy Cooking!

My Cooking Story and an AMAZING giveaway!!! (Closed)

Before a wedding there is so much preparation to take care of. Gown Fittings, Finding the perfect place for the wedding to take place, hiring photographers, makeup artists so on and so forth. For most brides the thought of cooking for their husbands for the first time once their married isn't a reason to panic or worry but rather a reason for excitement of the the independence and responsibility. For me it was all panic and worry in regards to the subject of cooking my soon to be husband a fitting meal. I had never ever cooked before (putting frozen fish sticks in the oven doesn't count!) Maybe it was something that had just never interested me before. A couple of weeks to the wedding I was in the grocery store shopping for my mother when a cookbook caught my eye. It was on a stand with more of it's kind. It was called Quick and Kosher- "Recipes From the Bride Who Knew Nothing" by Jaime Geller.
As soon as I picked it up and flipped through it I knew it was calling my name and that I had to buy it. And I did. The name of the book said it all. My wedding came and went. Pretty soon after, I started cooking, following each and every measurement and every ingredient in Jamie's cookbook. To my surprise I was better at cooking and baking then I thought. I didn't set off the smoke alarm and my food has some flavor. Not everything came out perfect and I did make some mistakes but Jaime had given me a key to success. Her cookbook was easy to read and the recipes were simple to follow. I soon realized how much I love cooking. It became a hobby and I enjoyed finding challenging recipes and trying them out. Now I am at a point of creating my own recipes and sharing them here. I probably wouldn't be where I am today in the cooking aspect without Jaime and this cookbook. Jaime is my inspiration until today. Recently she published her second cookbook Quick and Kosher- "Meals in Minutes" - this one for me was also a huge hit! Timing is key when you have children or work etc. Jaime makes it easy!
Check out her website: http://www.joyofkosher.com/ for more information about Jaime, her cookbooks, her recipes etc. You will see why she is such an inspiration to me and I'm sure there is something you can learn there as well.

So if you are how I was and you are new to cooking let me just say you can do it! Once you learn some techniques and follow some easy recipes you will  be the gourmet chef of your home. Product Review: L'Oreal Paris Extra-Intense Liquid Pencil Eyeliner, 799 Carbon Black

For most women who wear makeup there is usually one important product that is a staple in thier makeup kit. Maybe it's a blush, an eyeshadow or perhaps a lipgloss. It's constantly used, replenished and collected and it's the one product type the perfect makeup look couldn't be without. For me that item is eyeliner. I do not wear eyeliner every day but it is my go-to makeup product. I have found and tried lots of great ones and I continue to enjoy trying out new ones. Liquid, gel, pencils etc. There are alot of eyeliners out on the market now both high end and low end. There are some really great ones and some that just don't suffice I love to experiment with lots of different liners and time and time again I go back to this one because its so amazing!
L'Oreal's Extra-Intense Liquid Pencil Eyeliner has been on the shelves at the drugstore for a while. I have loved it ever since I first tried it. The reason I am just talking about it now now is because I like to try a product over and over again testing it and comparing it to other similar ones before formulating my honest opinion. L'oreal says these liners are smudge resistant, glide on smoothly and are like liquid liner in pencil form. 4 shades are offered (black, carbon black, gray and brown) and they retail for about $8.49 wherever L'oreal products are sold.

L'oreal wasn't exxagerating with their description of these liners they are really fabulous!  Some other liners that are such a dry formula that they need to be dragged across the lashline can really iritatte and bother. These are not like that. They apply really easily and the point glides smoothly creating the look of liquid liner.  The color is richly pigmented the carbon black is very black which gives an intense, dramatic bold look. It is very comparable to some of the great higher end eyeliners out there- Urban Decay 24/7 Pencil and Makeup Forever's Aqua Liner to  name a few.  They really are pretty much smudge resistant once they set you will need a really great makeup remover to get it off they can pretty much last up to 16 hours!

This pencil is very versatile in creating many different looks:

It can be smudged and blended easily before it drys/sets for a really great smoky eye!
or it can be used to create a thick winged eyeliner look

The setbacks for this liner and my tips : The only real small setback with this liner is with it's extemely creamy texture it can create a really heavy line and smudge all over if your not really careful while applying. To avoid this try to apply when there is time to do so carefully with relaxed steady hands to get a perfect smooth line the way you want it. Also it may be a little smudgy so be careful once it's on not to touch the eyelid until it set and dries. It is pretty smudge proof and long lasting but it isn't completely waterproof. Also for those people with very oily lids this may not be a good liner for you because it is so slippery as it is it may smudge right off. Someone with an oilier lid may want to choose an eyeliner with more of a dry formula.
Other then that this is by far one of my favorite eyeliners which I wear pretty often.

Have you used this eyeliner before? What do you think of it? What is your favorite eyeliner?

Makeup Tip of The Week: Eyelid Primers

The tip:

Always use an eyeshadow primer before applying eyeshadow. This will ensure that your eyeshadow doesn't crease and that it lasts all day.

Why you should take the time to do this: The primer will also keep the eye shadow vivid and high in pigment.

Some good ones:

Urban Decay Primer Potion
 Sephora $19

Two Faced Shadow Insurance
Sephora $18

Mac Paint Pot in "Nubile"
Mac $17.50

E.L.F Eyelid Primer
Eyeslipsface.com or Target $1.00

Product Review: Revlon Colorstay Foundation

I do not wear foundation every day. I do wear it when I'm going out at night or to a special event/ simcha etc. It gives me a better coverage then my normal every day concealer and lasts longer. Also foundation photographs better then concealer. I have tried lots of high end foundations and lots of foundations from the drugstore. In the drugstore category this is definitely one of my favorites. I try lots of different ones but once in a while I go back and pull this one out and I remember why I really love this foundation!

Why do I love this foundation so much?
Heres a few reasons:

1) It gives a nice flawless finish for my combination-normal skin. It doesn't cake, it lasts close to 18 hours and it has great coverage.

2) It has a dewy finish for those that like that and can have a matte finish with a little bit of powder dusted over it.

3) A little goes a long way. I take out a quarter sized amount of it onto my hand and it lasts for my entire face and neck area. That  also means it doesn't run out very quick so I get my moneys worth.

4) It goes for a pretty decent price at the drugstore (Walmart, Duane Reade, Rite Aid, Walgreens etc. )

5) There are many different shades to choose from. From very light to very dark shades. There are some with warm tones and some with cool tones. My shade is 220 Natural Beige for Combination-Normal Skin.

6) They also cater to many different skin types from combination to combination-normal skin,  combination-oily skin and combination-dry skin or just normal, oily skin or dry skin. The formulas are in fact different in the different skin type categories. I accidentally bought the one for dry
skin once when I was in a rush and realized it was very different once I started using it because the formula for dry skin didn't blend well for my combination normal skin type..

There are a couple of things that I don't like that much as well:

a) Most foundations that are made more recently come with a pump. This one does not. The same company makes a similar photo ready foundation that comes with a pump. I have never tried it since I loved this one that much. It is very disapointing though because it's hard to get the right amount out and I don't like wasting product. I hope they start making it with a pump! that would be amazing.

b) my only other complaint with this foundation is that it has a strange smell. I didn't even notice for the entire first year that I used it interestingly enough. I was recently reading reviews on different foundations and came across one for this foundation. I noticed that someone had written that the foundation had a strange smell. When I next used it I smelled it and in fact it does have a weird smell. It is a very faint scent but if you compare it to other foundations that have no smell at all or very little smell it may not be very appealing to you. It smells a little like paint or paint thinner. Very strange!

All in all I am very impressed with this foundation. I have used it for over 2 years on and off. I love it! I go back to it alot because I like it so much and it is very comparable to alot of my higher end expensive foundations.

Please note: I am not being paid to review this product or any other products I may review. I really do love this product and I like to give my honest opinion for those of you who need help when shopping for makeup. Also have in mind that this product may not wear well for everyone. Some are allergic to ingredients that others aren't and some have specific skin types that need specific foundations with specific ingredients.
