Makeup Tip of The Week: Foundation Application, Choosing The Correct Color, Brushes and Tools

Hilfiger

The previous makeup tip post was all about foundation types, coverages and finishes. If you haven't yet seen that and need some help finding a perfect foundation then go check it out here.
This weeks tip is going to cover the topic of choosing a color that suits you best and proper application of foundations including which tools and brushes are meant for what.

Choosing a color:
Foundation plays such an important roll in any makeup look. It is the base upon which you build the entire look. Therefore it is the last place to economize. Find a foundation that suits you best and stick with it. Spending a little extra money and purchasing it at a cosmetic counter will be great because they allow you to test the color first and you can then take time to decide what you like. Purchasing it from a drugstore can be just as good as long as you can return it if the shade doesn't work. Either way, it'll be a fraction of the price.
So here's what to do when you are testing a foundation color. Do not be afraid or embarrassed to spend alot of time at the cosmetics counter as it will save you a lot of time later. Try out as many shades as you like until you find your perfect match. Put a little of the tester foundation on the jawline-on the neck where the jaw bone starts- this will be the ultimate area to match to. If it disappears but evens out the skin tone after blending thoroughly and allowing it to dry completely then you have found your perfect match. The best match will give you your best look which is why it so important to test colors before purchasing. If you see a spot of color after you test it then it is clearly not a good choice for you. It should be completely invisible, matching up exactly to your natural skin tone. The foundation will be like a canvas for everything else you apply and it needs to be flawless. Don't try using a shade too dark to give your face a tanned look, that is what self tanners and bronzers are for. A foundation that is too dark or too light will look fake and unnatural. You may actually find that you will need a shade or two darker for the summer months if/when your original color darkens a little. While you are testing the colors you can test the feel of it- whether it's too heavy, if it works for your skin type etc. Also, If you are having trouble finding a perfect shade you can try mixing two to get a shade that matches perfectly.

How to apply specific types of foundation:

Cream Foundation:
To apply cream foundation, properly cleanse and moisturize your face and neck. Apply foundation soon after applying moisturizer. A little cream foundation goes a long way. It's heavier and more opaque than liquid foundation, so you'll want to apply it with a light touch, adding more as necessary. Applying cream foundation with a damp makeup sponge allows you the most control. Dot the foundation onto your face, and blend with your sponge making sure to do so very well at the jaw line to avoid a line of demarcation. If you want a dewy finish, skip the powder. Add a light dusting of powder for a matte finish. Cream blushes will be a good choice with cream foundations as they work well together. If you apply cream foundation to your eyelids, you'll want to stick to cream eye shadow. Also keep in mind that excess powder applied over cream foundation tends to flake and collect in the fine lines and creases so be careful and start with a little at first. If you aren't comfortable with using a sponge then a flat foundation brush can work well too as it is easiest for blending.

Powder foundation:
Powder forms are the easiest to apply for a flawless natural look. All you need to do is take a large fluffy brush and dust the foundation powder all over the face going back over the spots that need a little extra coverage.
Mineral foundations get applied that same way.

Liquid Foundation:
Liquid Foundations are most commonly applied with brushes or similar tools.

Brushes:

Traditional flat foundation brushes- are great for targeted application. Especially if you like to focus on applying it down the center of your face or you like to build coverage in specific areas. Some of these brushes can be a little streaky in application so you may want to use a sponge or your fingers when you are finished to blend out the streaks.

Stippling Brushes/ Duo Fiber Brushes- are great for a very precise application. They offer a very even, airbrushed coverage then the traditional brushes. The only downside is that using one can cause the foundation application to be very time consuming. If you are willing and able to take that time you can get a beautiful polished finish.

Buffing/Flat Top Kabuki Brush- this style of brush is my favorite to use for applying my foundation and is my preference to any other brushes. They are either in a kabuki style form or just a very densely packed fluffy brush.
This brush used dry, will give a full coverage airbrush finish within a matter of seconds.
Used damp, it can give a full coverage foundation a little more of a sheer finish for that less heavy feeling in the hot summer months. They basically are the best brushes for control without the time commitment.

Other Tools:

A sponge is probably the easiest method of application- they are relatively full proof in getting a very even coverage. The only problem with a standard sponge is that they tend to be very wastely of products because they absorb it. Using a beauty blender sponge is a good option and dampening it will help to avoid that absorption and give you an airbrushed finish.

Clean fingers are also a great way of application especially when you are in a time constraint and to really get the foundation blended perfectly. If you have an oily skin type I would not recommend doing it this way.

The Actual Application of Foundation:

How to apply the foundation no matter what tool or type of foundation you are using:
Start at the center of your face working the product up towards the forehead or down to towards the chin.
The most important part is blending so just blend, blend and blend until you get the look you wish to achieve. You can blend it out even more for a lighter coverage and dab it and do less blending for a heavier coverage.
Lastly don't forget to bring the foundation down onto the neck where the neckline on whatever clothing you will be wearing begins and don't forget the ears as well if they will be exposed.

I hope this tip will be helpful to you! Look out for more posts about foundation including my everyday foundation routine and my favorite brushes to use etc.

Weekend Splurge Recipe: Chocolate Caramel Cookies Drizzled with White Chocolate

I'm not really one to bake much but when I do, my favorite baked good to prepare is cookies. This one was inspired by/incorporated from a recipe in the Bais Yaakov Cookbook which I received as a gift and have very much enjoyed ever since. These cookies were not only a special treat this weekend but were our before and after the fast snack. I don't know about you but after a long fast I think I will eat the entire world and then after eating a bowl of cereal I am completely full so these cookies were the perfect thing. If you haven't yet borrowed or purchased this cookbook I recommend you to do so! I have had so much inspiration from it as well as enjoyed quite a few of the recipes.

These cookies weren't very difficult to prepare or take much time at all. You better believe they were delicious- soft and chewy with that sweet gooey caramel!  Here is the recipe:

Chocolate Caramel Cookies with White Chocolate Drizzle:

This recipe is Dairy. Can be made Parve (non- dairy) with proper substitutions.
Yields: 18-24 Large Cookies.

Ingredients:

1 1/3 Cup Sugar
1 Cup Butter- Melted down and then cooled to room temperature
2 Large Egg Yolks
1/3 Cup Milk
2 Cups Flour
1/3 Cup Cocoa
1/4 Tsp Salt
1 Squeeze Bottle of Dairy Store Bought Caramel
1/2 a Dairy White Baking Chocolate Bar

Method:

1. Place 1 cup of butter in a pan and put it in the oven on a very low temperature keeping an eye on it and letting it melt down slowly. If you couldn't figure out how much 1 cup of butter would be in a solid form this will be the easiest way of measuring- once it's in a liquid form.

2. Put the 1 1/3 cup of Sugar in a mixing bowl and pour the 1 cup of melted butter in with it stirring it to combine very well.
(You can use an electric mixer or do it by hand, I did it by hand since I don't have a dairy mixer)

3. Add the 2 egg yolks and the 1/3 cup milk to the sugar-butter mixture and combine. Then add the dry ingredients- the 2 cups flour,  1/3 cup cocoa and 1/4 tsp. salt.

4. Mix all of the ingredients together until a basic cookie dough forms.

5. Leave the dough in it's mixing bowl and cover it with some cellophane wrap. Place it in the refrigerator and allow it to sit for at least an hour. (my dough sat for 3 hours)

6. Preheat the oven to 350. Take a large baking sheet and lay out a piece of parchment paper cutting it to fit perfectly to the sheet/pan.

7. Take about a tablespoon at a time of dough and roll it into a ball. Put each of these dough balls onto the sheet pushing them down with your thumb to form a cookie shape with a small well in the center for the caramel to go. Make sure that prepared cookies aren't put too closely together as they will get stuck to each other in baking.

8. Bake for 12 minutes and on removing them from the oven press the centers that have poofed back up back down to make a place for the caramel. Be careful as it will be very hot.

9. Let the cookie cool for a minute before squeezing a squeeze or two (1 tsp) of bottled caramel into the center where it is pressed in.

10. Refrigerate the cookies that have already been baked and caramel added while baking whatever dough is leftover in the mixing bowl and adding caramel to those once they have been removed from the oven.

11. Bring a small pot of water to a boil. Place a round disposable foil pan on top of the pot of boiling water. Put the piece of white chocolate in the foil pan allowing it to melt completely. Let it to cool for a minute and then pour it into a piping bag (I used a ziploc bag and cut a teeny hole in the corner.

12. Drizzle the cookies with the white chocolate pulling the piping bag back and forth over the cookies.

13. If you don't plan to serve immediately refrigerate until serving. In that case, let them sit in room temperature for about 10 minutes to soften and then serve.

Enjoy!

Thanks for stopping in! Hope you all had an easy and meaningful fast!

Makeup Product Review: Coastal Scents Brow Tones Quad

 Coastal Scents Brow Tones Quad:

I purchased this product months and months ago. When I first used it I really liked it and used the lightest shade to fill my brows in with an angled eyebrow brush every single day. Using a powder and angled brush to fill your brows in is the most natural way to do so. I have always been more of a pencil for the brows kind of girl. I like them more defined and that helps me achieve that look. So why have I not mentioned this product until now and what makes me suddenly want to talk about it? This palette sort of took a back burner when I found my favorite brow pencil from Mac in a perfect light brown shade called "lingering". But recently I decided to try something different and pulled this back out. I continued to use my mac pencil but this time topped it with that light brown color from this palette. I really liked the results- not too defined and yet not too natural. As I prepared to discuss this palette I went to the coastal scents website to see some details but I was shocked to see that it was nowhere to be found. Maybe it's been discontinued or it was limited edition. I was pleased to see that they've since released a new brow quad which is so similar. The only real noticeable differences are that they redesigned the packaging and that these new ones don't have a similar color to that last one which is extremely dark gray and not very common for many brow tones anyways in my opinion. So here is what I think of it:

What I love:

-I really like that there are 4 shades in this palette. There is one to suit every eyebrow color and they can be mixed to get even more exact. Not too many eyebrow palettes come with 4 shades! This one is great for my kit or any other makeup artists kit for that reason.

-I'm also really impressed with how they apply- nice and smooth, without any annoying crumbly fallout.

-Their lasting power is pretty great too. Alone or with a pencil underneath. I apply the color in the morning and it lasts for a good 12 hours without smudging, shmeering, falling or disappearing.

-The compact is a rectangle shape and is pretty flat so it fits in any bag for easy use. It has a large mirror for on the go application and a place for small travel brush which makes it even more convenient.

-There seems to be quite a bit of product in each pan guaranteeing that I will have it around for quite a while (alot longer then any of my pencils that's for sure!)
-Coastal scents has really decent pricing on all their products. I don't remember how much this costed me exactly since it was so long ago but I am sure I didn't spend very much on this palette. The new brow quad that available on their website now goes for $8.95 so either way-a huge bargain.

Overall:

I really like this eyebrow palette for a very natural or defined but still more natural look.
The only thing that annoys me about this palette is that it's a little hard to open. It has one of those niches that you stick your nail into and pull upwards. I almost cracked my nail the first time I opened it. That could be why they made a new design. When I do finish with this one I'll probably purchase that new one to try. If I do I will definitely leave an updated review here on the blog.

Have you tried this brow quad? Have you tried any of coastal scents products? This company is not talked about enough but trust me they have some pretty cool items on their website. Go check it out, you may actually find something you absolutely love!

I hope this review will be helpful to you in your search for great beauty products!

9 Days Non-Meat Meal Ideas

If you are a religious jew then you will be in full dairy mode starting late last week. What is this 9 days time period? It is a religious observance in Judiasm that takes place during the first 9 days of the Jewish month of Av in July leading up to tishaa baav- the 9th of av. But These 9 days aren't only about eating dairy, not swimming or cutting hair, not wearing new clothing or listening to music. There is a deeper meaning and purpose. It is a great time for introspection, thought and building a closer relationship with the one above. It's also a good time for working on and mending old friendships or building new ones. These 9 days are not as much about mourning but of hope and anticipation for a redemption and being the best person you can be. Just something to think about.

If you haven't already planned this weeks menu and you need some help planning some non meat meals here are some ideas including some of my favorite dairy and non meat recipes from here on the blog and elsewhere/pinterest as well. They will all be linked with the website for the recipes so that you will have an easier time planning your dairy/non meat meals this week.

Weekend Splurge Recipe- Chocolate Marshmallow Cream Milkshakes Topped with Chocolate Shavings

The weekend is long over but looking back on the enjoyable parts of it always makes the week fly by a little faster for me. This was what we enjoyed over the weekend.
This is one of those amazing drinks that just looks like it's a million calories. I bet it was. But I didn't care. If you've read my "weekend splurge" posts before you will know that the weekends are my time to relax and enjoy some foods that I don't necessarily splurge on during the week. Sometimes it's just a special desert other times a deep fried food.

I am finally at a point in my weight loss journey of maintaining and toning and I can therefore allow myself certain luxuries in food that I didn't have when I was doing the hardcore dieting. But the one thing that I've learnt from my experiences of dieting is that it never helped to deprive myself completely of things that I enjoy as a treat. It is one of things that helps me stay on track with trying my hardest to stay in shape during the week. I think now that you've seen this awesome drink you are probably planning on making this weekend splurge idea a part of your weekend ritual. It was amazing. So here's the easy recipe so you can hopefully enjoy it too. This recipe was inspired by one I saw on foodnetwork.com . Perfect for a hot summer afternoon treat!

Chocolate Marshmallow Cream Milkshakes

Ingredients:

Marshmallow Cream:

1 Carton of Heavy Cream (Enough for 1/2 Cup)
1/4  Cup Marshmallow Fluff

Chocolate Milkshake:

2 Cups Milk
1/4 Cup Chocolate Syrup
3 Cups Chocolate Ice Cream

Chocolate Chips to shave as garnish.

Method:

1. Start by whipping 1/2 cup of heavy cream 1/4 cup of marshmallow fluff. It can be done in a blender, a mixer, a hand mixer or by hand with a whisk and a large mixing bowl. Once it begins to fluff up and show some stiff peaks put the mixture to the side in the refrigerator until ready to serve the drink.

2. Then prepare the actual shake part. Put the 2 cups of  milk, 1/4 cup chocolate syrup and 3 cups of chocolate ice cream in a blender. Blend till smooth and combined but still thick.

3. Take a tall clear glass and start by putting in a spoonful or two of the chocolate shake mixture. Carefully take some of the marshmallow cream on a spoon and layer it on top of the chocolate. Try to push the cream over to the outsides so that the layer can be seen well from the outside of the glass. Then add more chocolate on top and cream again layering as much as you like as many times as you like.

4. Shave some chocolate chip over the top as a garnish. Any other garnish you like can easily be added- fruit, nuts, marshmallows etc.

Enjoy!

Product Review: Smashbox Sheer Focus Tinted Moisturizer in the Shade Luminous

Smashbox Sheer Focus Tinted Moisturizer SPF 15 in the Shade Luminous- the lightest shade available.

Product Description:

Smashbox says: "Our lightweight, oil-free tinted moisturizer contains vitamins for radiant skin. The citrus honey miniaturization technology nourishes, while UVA/UVB SPF 15 helps guard against future damage so skin stays flawless and protected"

What are tinted Moisturizers? They are exactly what their name would have you expect. They are moisturizers with a slight tint to them, often contain SPF and are the lightest and easiest face makeup product to use and apply. Falling into the sheer category, tinted moisturizers are ideal for someone who has naturally flawless skin and just wants to even out skin tone with minimal effort. Because this product doubles as a moisturizer, there is no need to also apply a daily moisturizer with this product. Clean hands or a brush can be used to apply it.

This is the very first tinted moisturizer I have ever tried. They had been recommended to me many times because of my normal skin type that doesn't need much coverage. For some reason I just always steered towards foundations. As the summer months came closer I knew I would have to try something a little more lightweight and I went for a new release by Smashbox- their bb cream and of course loved it. Go read my post all about that here. The difference between the two is huge though. The bb cream is a heavier product with a much better coverage. It's perfect for when I am taking photos or looking for that heavier coverage on a night out. One of the major differences between bb creams and tinted moisturizers is that authentic bb creams have built in primers as well as properties to help heal the skin etc. while the tinted moisturizer is just that a moisturizer with some color. I am so glad that I tried this tinted moisturizer. It is perfect for my quick every day face routine in the summertime. I was a little worried in trying both their bb cream and tinted moisturizer since their foundations didn't work for me at all but I was pleasantly surprised!

What I love:

-I don't know if it's only the shade that I own- luminous that is so glowy but I seriously am loving the look it gives my face.

-It is super easy to apply- I usually use my fingers to do so and it makes for a very easy face makeup application when I'm in a rush to go out.

-It moisturizes my skin at the same time as giving me a little color and coverage to work with so I really love that!

-I also like the fact that I don't need more then a squirt from this easy packaging for my entire face.

-The fact that it also has some SPF in it is great too.

-It sets on my face slow enough that I can apply it evenly but fast enough that I don't have to wait around for it to dry.

-It doesn't have any strange scent that some products with built in sunscreens can sometimes have.

-It doesn't have a sticky/greasy sunscreen/moisturizer texture. It goes on smooth and dries smooth.

What I Dislike:

-I feel like they could have put a little more then 15 SPF in this product. I like to wear at least SPF 45 in the summer. I'm not sure if the reason for this is because the SPF would have made it even more glowy then it already is which is just perfect.

- Even with using just a squirt every day. I feel like it ran out so fast. It's not a massive package. I just think that for a $30 item  you should get a larger package with a bit more product in it.

Overall:

Since the things I love about this product outweigh the small things that I don't love as much I think that I will probably repurchase to use for the rest of the summer. I'm a little obsessed with this face product which gives me a great glow.

Have you tried this tinted moisturizer or one by a different company? If you have what do you think of it? Any recommendations for a tinted moisturizer that you've been loving?

If you would like to try this product it can be purchased at Smashbox.com or Sephora.com and it costs $30

Makeup Tip of the Week: Foundations- Type, Coverage and Finish to Suit You

This weeks makeup tip is all about foundations. Foundation is a standard step in most women's makeup rituals. And for good reason. It is a very important part of any makeup routine as it creates the perfect canvas for the rest of the makeup. But where should you start? There are so many companies offering foundations in so many different shades, textures and formulas. There are also different coverages and different finishes. And then there is the factor of different skin types to take into account. Finding the perfect foundation for you can be quite a tedious job so I thought I could offer my tips here to help those of you who are new to makeup or just looking to change it up, find the perfect one for you.

So when you are in the market for a new foundation there are 4 things that must be considered-  1) the type of foundation 2) the coverage of the foundation 3) the finish of the foundation 4) and your skin type

Finding the perfect foundation for you can be a long journey of trial and error but if you take these things into account you can easily find one that suits you. Many women choose foundations based on recommendations from friends or reviews online which can be really helpful at times. Very often though you may find that a foundation that works really well for someone else may not suit you in the least and vice verse so you need to consider your skin type and suitability for the product before anything else. A good foundation will not only even out the skin and conceal blemishes but also keep the skin looking flawless and healthy for a long duration of time.

Foundation Types:
1) Liquid Foundations - probably the most popular of the bunch. These are great for getting a natural look because of how smoothly they apply and can be used on any skin type. The great thing is that some really great ones can even be found at the drugstore for a very decent price. Their lasting powers are usually not bad too.
For oily skin a water based foundation is best because using an oil based foundation will leave you with a shiny face or no makeup at all within a couple of hours depending how oily your face is. The water based ones will hold up better. Just read the back of the bottle to find that information.
If you have dry skin and you choose to purchase/use a water based foundation it could be too drying for your skin and leave you with a powdery caked look- not the best look for anyone. So you will want to use an oil based foundation instead. Again, always read the back of the bottle/container for that info.
For a combination skin type I would recommend buying a liquid foundation that is geared specifically towards combination skin or try both water based and oil based and see which works best for you.
For a normal skin type you can prob. get away with using both water or oil based liquid foundations. Again, just see which works best for you.
2) Cream or Mousse Foundations- These are ideally suited for dry to extremely dry skin since they are normally oil based and lock moisture into the skin. They can be used on combination and normal skin as well, but oily skinned individuals should avoid them. They provide a better level of coverage then a liquid foundation as well as long lasting wear- alot better then a liquid foundation's. They also fill lines and minimize pores. So they can be a very good choice.
3) Powder Foundations- A pressed powder based foundation which is usually found in compact form is best for oily and combination skin types. Dry skinned individuals should avoid these as they will only dry the skin out more and create a cakey look. These foundations are easy to apply and blend into the skin gently and easily. At the same time they control excess oil and are known for their beautiful matte-satin finish. If you are in a hurry this is the best and easiest option for you.
4) Mineral Powder Foundations- Similarly to the regular pressed powder foundations, these mineral types are best for extremely oily or sensitive acne prone skin since they consist of special minerals which heal and calm irritations and inflammations. They can be used on all skin types though. These foundations are light and gentle to apply and help with oil control while keeping the face looking smooth and poreless.

Coverage-
1) Sheer Coverage: is lightweight and provides very little coverage of the skin. This coverage will be the softest and least noticeable with very little pigmentation. It is best for very young or naturally flawless skins that don't have that much to cover. Tinted moisturizers, bb creams and some specific lightweight foundations are characterized in this way.

2) Medium Coverage- is the standard coverage formula. It provides a basic medium coverage and can be used sparingly for less coverage or built up for a heavier coverage- Setting with a powder can help with getting that heavier opaque coverage. This kind of coverage would especially be good for someone that has some light acne or redness that needs to be concealed . A variety of both liquid foundations and powder foundations will have this kind of coverage.
3) Full/Heavy Coverage- will easily cover almost any imperfection in the skin with very little product and is usually found in the use of cream foundations. This kind of coverage is best for those who have heavy scars, birthmarks or severe acne that they wish to cover completely.

Finishes:
A finish is how a foundation sets and looks about a few minutes after it is applied. There are three primary finishes: matte, dewy and then the imbetween which would be semi matte/satin.
1) Semi matte/ Satin- this one is the one of the most common foundation finishes as it is the most universally flattering. Satin finishes provide the face with a soft healthy glow without being too matte or too dewy. It is the perfect imbetween and is typically the ideal option for all skin types.
2) Matte-This finish is popular for those with oily or combination skin as it won't provide the face any sort of dew or glowy texture. It's fantastic for achieving a long lasting look that is more subtle looking  and somewhat resembles the perfection of a porcelain doll.
3) Dewy- The dewy skin look, characterized with a healthy quenched looking skin is a relatively new finish in the makeup world. It is commonly seen on models in magazines and provides the face with a dewy fresh right off the beach sort of look. This finish is ideal for normal to dry skin types.
