Potatoes and Hot Dogs with Crispy Fried Rice

Potatoes and Hot Dogs:

Ingredients:
-5 Medium Sized Yukon Gold Potatoes
-1 Package Beef Hot Dogs
-1 Medium Onion
-3 Tablespoons Olive Oil
-3 Tablespoons Ketchup
-1 Tablespoon Hoisin Bbq Sauce
-1 Tsp Chili Sauce
-Salt and Pepper to taste
-1/2  teaspoon garlic powder
-1 Cup Water

Directions:
Place the olive oil in a deep non stick frying pan and heat over low flame.  Peel the potatoes and cut them into small cube sized pieces. Put potatoes into pan and fry for 2-3 minutes. Meanwhile chop onion in small pieces and slice hot dog up into 1 inch pieces. Season with salt, pepper and garlic powder and let it all fry up and brown for about 15 minutes. Add water, ketchup, bbq sauce and chili sauce. Let it cook for another 15 minutes till sauce has thickened and diminished to desired consistancy.

Crispy Fried Rice:

Ingredients:
-1 Cup Jasmine Rice (Basmati Rice or any other rice can be used as well)
-1/2 Cup Water
-3-6 Tablespoons Veg Oil
-1 Tsp Lemon Juice
-2 Tsps Brown Sugar
-Salt and pepper to taste

Heat water in a medium saucepan on a medium flame.  Add pinch of salt to pot. Then add rice once water has come to a boil. Let it cook till rice is fluffy, almost cooked through and water has boiled out completely. Place oil in non stick frying pan. Put rice in and pat it down on top of the oil. Let it fry and crisp on bottom. Fluff it and turn it over every few minutes to keep it from burning. If it seems the oil is going dry and the rice is not completely done, add some more oil. Then Add lemon juice and brown sugar when rice is almost ready. Once it is at desired crispyness, serve.

They can be eaten together or seperate both delicious.

This is a fav in my house!

Enjoy.

Chanuka 2011- Cheesy Red Pepper Latkes (Pancake Style):

Cheesy Red Pepper Latkes (Pancake Style):

Ingredients:
-7-8 Medium Yukon Gold Potatoes
-2 Eggs
-Salt and Pepper to Taste
-1 Small Onion
-1 Small Red Pepper
-1 Tsp Chopped Fresh Garlic
-1 Tablespoon Parmesan Cheese
-1 Tsp Flour
-Oil For Frying

Instructions:

Peel Potatoes. Place in blender ( I did it this way to get more of a pancake style latke)  or food processor with eggs, Salt and pepper, onion, red pepper, fresh garlic, parmesan cheese and flour. Blend till smooth.

Place Oil In frying pan and fry 2 Tablespoons of potato mixture at a time. Once the pancake/latke seems golden on both sides lay out on paper towels to let out any excess oil from frying. Serve Warm.

Took two latkes once cooled off. Placed a piece of american cheese in the center with a romaine lettuce leef and topped it with some sliced yellow pepper.

                                        Latkes once ready and golden

They tasted so delicious!

This has been a very nice Chanuka! We've been eating way too many latkes and donuts like everyone else. Nothing a little exercise won't take care of.

I got an amazing gift from my father this Chanuka!
A handmade cutting board. My father is a great woodworker. He made this in his shop for all the women in the family. It was very thoughtful and it is definitely very useful for someone like me who loves to cook!

A Chanuka Gift Guide Series- Part Three: For The Children in Your Life

This is part three of my gift guide series for all the special people in your life.
Before I start with the childrens gift guide I just want to mention quickly that I really don't know who made up the idea that you must give everyone gifts when Chanuka comes. That'll cost a fortune and if you have a big family and a really large amount of friends it'll be so hard to get everyone gifts. I am a big fan of giving birthday gifts because that is that specific persons special day and you will be able to really think into it and give them something they will really apreciate. I did get gifts for some of my family for Chanuka this year but I really didn't go crazy. I also think that Chanuka is so much more important in the gift giving aspect for the children so if gifts are being given they should be given to the kids. These parties and gifts are the memories they will cherish forever. Holiday time is for familys to get together and spend time together so don't forget Chanuka isn't all about what gifts you get and how expensive they were. A friend of mine was telling me that in their family they give small gifts but it's really fun in the way that they do that- before chanuka everyone picks a name out of a hat and they buy a small $2-$5 gift that has something to do with the actual person. For example if one of them tends to get headaches alot a small bottle of tylenol or for someone who gets heartburn a lot a mini prilosec bottle. For a young girl who likes hair products- a mini shampoo or some hair clips etc. etc. It's cute and can be funny. Then they go around the table and give the gifts to their person and everyone opens it up and they discuss why they got it. That way everyone gets a gift and noone has to empty their bank for it and it's fun! What a great idea!

On to the childrens gift section of this series:

1)                                For a Child Birth-12 Months

Fisher-Price Baby's First Blocks

I think this is a great idea for a baby birth-12months old. When their really small they can chew on the big blocks as a teething toy or rattle them around, play with them in the bath etc. Once they start sitting up they can start sorting them and learning about shapes. It's a great toy to keep them busy while it's also educational and it can be for either gender child.

Diapers.com $9.99

2)                                   For a child 12-24 Months

Fisher-Price Lil' Zoomers Rockin' Roll Truck

My son will be 2 in January. We bought this toy for him when he was prob 13 or 14 months. It is still one of his favorites! He play with the big and small trucks seperately and together. They have a ball on top of them that spins and he loved rolling that when he was littler. The bigger truck has an on and off switch for music. My son loves that! When the toy is rolled it play the music and when the orange side bar is pushed downwards the music also goes off. The great part about the on and off button is that it doesnt run out of batteries as quickly, it can be shut off when it starts to annoy the adults to be played with without the music and it won't go off in the middle of the night when stepped on accidentaly. The little orange gate at the back of the big truck can be put up or down so that they little one can roll out of it or sit inside of it with the gate closed. We love this toy. I am sure your 12-24 month old will love it as well.

Toys R Us.com $15.99

3)                                 For the 2-3 Year Old Child

Little Tikes Garden Bubble Leaf and Lawn Blower

My son loves bubbles! This is such a cute idea for a kid his age. When using the regular bubble bottles with wands the parents hands tend to get really sticky. This is a great toy for kids to do it on their own. Love how it looks like one of those leaf blowers that landscapers use so they feel like their big!

Toys R Us.com $22.99

4)                                       For the 3-4 Year Old Child

Hexbug Bridge Battle Set

This toy is great because it comes in pieces that the child can build and put together. It comes with a nano-  robotic creature that behaves like a real bug and scuttles around the bridge structure that they built.

7)                                               For the 10-12 Year Old

Harry Potter Paperback Boxed Set (Books 1-7)  By J.K. Rowling

I began reading these books when they came out. I must have been about 12. These books are a favorite in my family! We would sit around on the couch as and listene to them on tape together once the really young kids were in bed and we would pre-order from amazon  when they were about to come out and wait in trepidation for the order to arrive. Then they would be passed around from oldest to youngest. So I usually got it 4th being the second to oldest. My sister reads so fast so it would take her less then a day to finish it. So I usually got it 4th being the second to oldest. These books are written really well!

Recipe: The Best Potato Kugel Ever!

I have tried so many different potato kugel recipes out. I have a specific texture and taste in mind when I think of an amazing potato kugel. After peeling that many potatoes it better be a great one. I got recipes from friends, relatives, cookbook etc. and still couldnt find that perfect kugel.

Finally I decided to just make something I thought would work for what I was looking for and ta da I have made the most perfect potato kugel to my liking.

A Tip: If you like a really fluffy potato kugel add a little seltzer to the mix it helps fluff it up.

One thing that has changed over the years is the disposable pan I use. At first I used a deep 9x13. I noticed that was a lot of crisp kugel and thinner slices.
With the round pans you get a whole lot more of that mushy goodness and less of that crisp. Also, I always have enough to make two kugels and with the rectangle one I'd only have enough for 1.

So as this is my very own delicious recipe that I have perfected and enjoyed time and time again, I thought I would share with the rest of you.

Potato Kugel:

Ingredients:

10 Medium Sized Yukon Gold Potatoes
1 Medium Onion
-1/2 Cup Vegetable Oil
-5 Eggs
-1 Teaspoon of Salt
-1/2 Tsp of Pepper
-1 Tablespoon Vinegar

Directions:
1. Fit blade with small to medium sized holes onto food processor. Process 5 potatoes, then  process the onion and then the rest of the potatoes.
2. Meanwhile preheat oven to 450 put oil in disposable pan of choice and place in the oven for about 5 minutes or until it begins to sizzle.
3. Fit mixing device into food processor and add eggs, vinegar, salt and pepper. Mix.
4. Add the hot oil and mix again to combine.
5. Pour the mixture into the pan. Mix with a spoon to be sure everything is combined perfectly. Then lay the bottom of the spoon over the top of the kugel flattening it a little to even it out all the way around.
6. Bake on 450 for 1 hr and 1/2 or until it gets browned on top and is at desired readiness.

A Chanuka Gift Guide Series- Part One: For The Women in Your Life

The weekend is almost here! I am very grateful for that. It has been a long week and I am looking forward to a nice weekend spent with family.

Chanuka is almost here as well. The crisp December air is reminding me of lighting candles and the smell of latkes. Can't wait to spend time with the extended family. Give gifts etc.

With Chanuka coming I know lots of you are wondering what to get for that special someone. So I thought I'd make a list of some items big and small for different ages and genders. I will put about 10 items per category. Shopping for gifts can get very expensive so I will stay in the $100 and below range.

Well start with the female women (your wife, best friend, mother,sister...) I will do a series this one for being for the women. The next one for men and a third one for children in my next two posts. Check back for that.

1)

                                       Michael Kors Gold Fragrance

I recently received a little spritz bottle sample of this item along with one of my sephora orders. I fell in love with it right away. With Michael Kors' new signature fragrance, it has a rich, luxurious scent, it is also noticeable scent and lasts all day unlike lots of other perfumes I have. This perfume has alot of personality! What a great gift for that women in your life. Bloomingdales $75 1.7 oz

2)

                                              Nars Danmari Palette

When it comes to makeup, palettes are great for conserving space. For a women this is a great go-to palette. It has a total of 6 shades- blushes, a highlight shade and the most amazing bronzers. This one is the new limited edition Danmari All About Cheeks palette by NARS Cosmetics. In my opinion Nars makes some of the best blushes and bronzers. They are highly pigmented and the bronzer isnt orangey or dirty looking. Its perfect for a little contour. $65 Sephora

3)

Cocktail Bling Essie Winter Nail Polish Collection

My favorites in this collection are brooch the subject and bobbing for baubles. Brooch the Subject is a great light nude color. I'm wearing it now. It's a great color for when you want to feel pretty and wear nail polish but not wear too much color. And brooch the subject is that perfect navy color. One of my favorite colors in the winter in nail polishes and eye shadows is navy! The rest of the collection is very  nice. Those are my favorites. They usually retail for about $8 so getting the entire cocktail bling essie winter collection would be $48

4)

                                             Urban Decay's Naked Palette

This is one of my favorite eyeshadow palettes. It comes packed with 12 gorgeous neutrals that work for absolutely everyone. Shades range from a light delicate champagne to a dark gritty gunmetal color. There is also a variety of textures some more shimmery and some a little more matte. It can be used for an every day look with the more neutral colors or a night out with the more daring smokey colors. These eye shadows are pretty pigmented and pretty well lasting when combined with urban decays primer potion. This will make a great gift. Sephora $48

 5)

The Hunger Games Trilogy

The Hunger Games, written by Suzzane Collins, is fiction in the young adult genre.
When the book opens, North America as we know it has been destroyed and is now divided into 12 districts, ruled by an oppressive government located at the Capitol. Katniss Everdeen, a 16-year-old girl from District 12, takes her younger sister’s place as one of 24 “tributes” selected every year to participate in the Hunger Games at the Capitol. The Games pit children from ages 12 to 18 against each other in a fight to the death in a giant, treacherous arena. Everything is televised and highly publicized all over the country. Katniss must not only survive the Games, but deal with a romance between her and another tribute from District 12, all the while deciding if she is willing to kill strangers her own age as a pawn of an oppressive government. The Hunger Games is the first book in a trilogy, and it was released in 2008.
I'm still in the process of finishing this trilogy. I am right at the middle of the Mockingjay one.  It is a combination of nerve-racking tension and thrilling action. It never gets boring. I am very much enjoying this trilogy. It's aimed at the young adult world but I feel like to get the full idea and understand the background you'd have to be an adult to really enjoy it.  The reason it's in the women's gift section of this series is because I really enjoyed it and I believe any women my age will. Amazon.com $31.57 for the full trilogy in hard cover

6)

                                         Marc Jacob Turnlock Studs

These gorgeous Marc Jacob Turnlock Studs are surely a gorgeous choice. They come in a bunch of different colors as well. Jewelry is always a great choice when it comes to a women. You can never have enough stud earrings. Nordstrom $32

7)

Dior Show Waterproof Mascara

I have tried dozens of mascaras. I like a mascara that gives length and volume at the same time. I like the look of false lashes but not everyone has time to apply false lashes every day or for every special occasion. This mascara is great for getting that great even look without clumps and it stays all day and doesn't run down even with the occasional tears in the cold weather. Sephora $24.50

8)

Philosophy's Purity Made Simple Cleanser

I love all of philosphy's skin care products. This is one that I really get daily use out of. I wash my face with this cleanser when I wake up in the morning and before I go to sleep at night. It's great for cleansing and makeup removal at the same time.My skin type is combination- oily and it keeps my face looking clean and fresh all day long. It has a soft scent that doesn't annoy or hurt the skin but keeps you feeling refreshed. Also,  a little bit goes a long way so the product really lasts well. Philosophy.com 8 oz $20.00

9)

Chefmate Purple 4 Pc Cookware Set

For a women who loves to spend time in the kitchen and cook this is a fabulous gift idea! And it's one of my favorite colors- purple! It's non stick and Chefmate is a great company. This cookware set will give you delicious dinners all year round. Target $13.98

10)

                                           Bath and Body Works Candles

I love walking into a room in the house and smelling a delicious scent whether it is marshmallow fireside, hot chocolate, fresh fruity smells etc candles are lovely!  As soon as the weather turns a little cold at the end of Autumn and the beginning of Winter I begin to burn these candles. They last for about a month and a half or so- not too bad. It reminds me of sitting next to a warm fireplace on a cold night and it gives the house a good feeling. I love them and I'm sure any women you give it to would love it as a gift ecspecially around this wintery time! Bath and Body Works 4 oz Candle $9.50

I think those are all pretty good choices when it comes to gifts for women. No matter how much it costs a gift is a gift. So good luck for all of the shoppers out there who are having a hard time choosing the perfect gift for that perfect women.

I hope this guide has helped a little in that situation!

Check back for the gift guides for men and children. Also check back for a special giveaway gift coming up soon!

Till next time. Good Luck! Have a nice refreshing weekend!
